This month we saw the anniversary of two 'cultural icons', neither of whom could handle fame very well. The King, a poor boy who made good based on his talent; and Princess Di,...enough said.
Inadvertently, both symbolize their respective country of birth: Elvis's 'log cabin to the White House' and Di's 'born with a silver spoon but still managed to make good in spite of the obstacles of private education' approaches to life.
Which one (if either) will be remembered in 2107? |

Diana Spencer didn't represent my country whatsoever, she was part of a class elite that had as much to do with being British than a tadpole has to do with a shark.
Diana is a British cultural icon in the same way as Eva Peron is to Argentines, espcially amongst middle aged women. My mum loves Diana Spencer and said that the royal family killed her I argued that it was the tunnel wall in Paris that was to blame when Dianas forehead went splat into it! |

I figure they'll both be the subject of documentaries in a hundred years. |

How?
She represents a very tiny elite, my country is a bit more multi dimensional than to have the Germanic-Greek Saxe Gothas as
any kind of representative.
Anyway, Lord Spencer is pissed off about all the people always going on about his sister.
He said to reporters yesterday: 'I wish people would stop talking about Diana, it is driving me up the bloody wall'
Boom boom! |

She represents England the way Paris Hilton represents America. Sure it's a diverse country with many facets, but Paris Hilton sums it up pretty well. |

Does she bollox RT, I like you mate as you talk sense 99.9% of the time but on the estates and the towns of the north, diana spencer has as much in common with us than a penguin has in common with a boeing 747.
Unless you have lived in the UK for any length of time you wouldn't know I don't suppose! |

Very difficult choice, as both are overrated, insipid inflictions. The 60s groups - Beatles, Stones, Led Zepp - brought the blues, R&B and R&R to the people, not that hip-waving tosser, whose movies sucked beyond belief.
That said, the Brits and their 'outpourings of grief' (and some have the cheek to single-out the people of Liverpool for this) - see Diana, see Holly and Jessica, see Madeleine McCann, no doubt other examples of white, pretty, middle/upper-class females meeting a premature end - embarrass me.
No vote because I hate both, but I would, under torture, go for Elvis because I like R&R, even though do question that guy's contribution. The Beatles and the Stones learnt their trade through Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters - Elvis can *beep* off.

Yeah, I never saw the deal with Elvis. The others you mentioned were bigger influences in the music world, but for my father's sake (who was a big fan) I have to add Jerry Lee Lewis to that list. |

OZYMANDIAS
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Percy Shelley 1818 |
