It would be easier if we had an ignore function on this site. The moderators sure aren't doing their jobs to enforce the TOS.

1. If the thread is inappropriate for the board, it will be locked or removed without notice, but if it belongs in another forum it might just be moved. In other words, if an off-topic thread is found in the job-related forum it may be moved.

2. If the thread is flamebait, it will be locked or removed without notice. Individual flamebait may be deleted or edited at the moderators' descretion. Certain users who continue to post flamebait or engage in other questionable practices (such as trolling) may be subject to more serious sanctions.

3. If the thread turns into pure flaming, it will be locked or removed without notice. Sometimes a moderator may split the thread or delete certain portions in order to keep the discussion going.

4. If the thread turns from serious discussion into a chatroom the thread may be locked or removed without notice. Users are encouraged to use pms for chatting.

5. If the thread has run its course, and the same arguments keep on being brought up, it may be locked.

6. If the thread is frivolous or redundant (a new thread very similar to other already active threads), it may be locked or removed without notice.

7. If the thread is spam it may be locked or removed without notice.

8. Members have every right to enjoy a safe and cordial environment for discussion. It is not acceptable for Dave's ESL Cafe users to harrass, stalk or intimidate any other Dave's ESL Cafe members, on or off the board, privately or publicly. Members are also not to use Dave's ESL Cafe's forums or private messaging system as a means to arrange fights or threaten violence. Users found to be doing any of the above will face immediate sanctions.

9. Moderators are users too, and welcome public debate and discussion about issues and opinions they express which are unrelated to the discharge of their moderator duties. The moderators may permit public threads discussing board/moderator policy, at their discretion. However, publicly attacking moderators for the performance of their duties will result in a locked or deleted post, or more serious sanctions, depending on the situation. The moderators always welcome private messages from users regarding any issue.

10. Self-policing by the community at large is encouraged. Please take a moment and read over your comments before you post, and if you come across another user's post or thread which you feel violates the guidelines (or is in some other way questionable or potentially inappropriate), please send a private message (PM) to a moderator with a link to the material in question. Posting a reply in the thread (e.g.- "Just wait till the mods delete your post!" or "How come the mods are allowing this? ") is neither effective nor an appropriate method of dealing with such incidents. Please remember that, given the volume of posts on these forums, we are not always able to view every post or act in a timely manner all of the time.

11. Articles that are more than 300 words may be edited or deleted. Try to keep your comments concise. If an article is longer, post a link and quote only the really important parts to your argument.

12. Avatars are to be no larger than 100 pixels wide. They must not attempt to portray the user as having an official status here (e.g. mimiking ranks or copying avatars of mod team members).

13. Posts that contain attempts to bypass the obscenity filter may be removed without notice. Repeated instances of this from a particular user may result in moderator sanctions.

14. Threads older than one month in the non-Korea threads ("off-topic" and "current events", and "Buy/Sell/Trade" in particular) may be deleted at the moderators' discretion. Obsolete and time-sensitive threads in the other forums may also be deleted where the moderators feel this is appropriate.

15. No job vacancies, or job wanted posts may be posted on this board. This includes requests for temporary replacements. Jobs may be advertised only on the Korean Job Board. Please post any messages looking for work in the Post your resume section of the site. Any posts that recruit for jobs or solicit work on these forums will be deleted.

16. Ignoring warnings from moderators or administration to correct behavior may result in a permanent ban.

17. Please note that Private Message (PM) notification from Moderators to users of these forums in instances where a user's post or thread has been locked, removed, or temporarily relocated to the Moderators' Forum is a courtesy extended by the moderators rather than an inherent right of users, and as such this courtesy may not neccessarily be extended during times of high volume (e.g. an incident or a user's actions which engender a greater workload for the moderators) and/or may not neccessarily be extended to those users who have repeatedly disregarded Forum guidelines in the past. If you have a question regarding a post please send a private message to a moderator which provides as such information as the forum and thread it was posted in, the approximate time it was posted, and a brief description of its contents. Private messages which do not provide enough information for the moderators to track (e.g. "Hey! Where is my post from 3 days ago?!?!" or "What have you done with my posts?!?") will not receive a response. Inquiries regarding other users' posts (i.e. not your own) or inquiries regarding other users' sanctions (e.g. "Why was user X banned?" "Why was user Y's post removed?") will not receive a response.

18. Questions/concerns/comments regarding the administration and/or moderation of these forums are to be addressed in either Private Message to the moderators or in an email to [email protected] The moderators will endeavor to reply to all Private Messages in a timely manner but users should not expect an immediate reply and your patience and understanding is requested. Threads concerning the administration and moderation of these forum will at the moderators' descretion be locked or removed without notice.

Well written (regardless if whether or not the gyopos need you to do their work for them). But, I have to ask.......are you living in a pararell Korean univerise? You must hang out with some very open minded, educated, forethcoming and realist Koreans. I've met a few..........they're great. I wish I had met mroe of them.

"regardless if whether or not the gyopos need you to do their work for them"

Did you assume Im not a gyopo? I am a gyopo living in Canada. I spent 19 years in Korea. I was born in Korea and went through all the normal Korean schooling up to the first year in university. I guess I have a lot of clue about the country first-hand and I have kept in touch with Korea through lots of up-to-date information on the internet. I dont know if you can speak Korean fluently and if you usually converse with Koreans in Korean. Let me assume you speak to Koreans in English and many of the Koreans you have talked to were not exactly comfortable with speaking English. In that case, here is one thing to keep in mind first. The "pure blood" is an easy expression to throw around. You have to check in exactly what context it is mentioned. Its hard to express things deliberately when your language skills are not up there. You would tend to stick to a few comfortable phrases and just cut off sentences short. I used to do that myself when my English was even worse than now and it is something not to be overlooked when you speak to someone who doesnt speak your language very well. My bet is, if you ask them very specific questions on your end, you may get more interesting answers from them. Koreans commonly mention two different types of Koreans. Northern type (북방계/북방형) and Southern type (남방계/남방형) Koreans with stereotypical physical traits for each. Mark those two words 북방계 and 남방계 and bring them out in the next conversation with Koreans about the topic. Hopefully, young college students. However, Koreans do seem to believe Koreans as a whole today have a bit of distinctiveness from other Asians in physical features. But do they believe their far or close ancestors did not mingle with ancestors for people outside current Korean borders at all? You can directly ask them and check.

You may be interested in taking a look at this. I read a few years ago a group of Japanese researchers came up with this map. Sorry, I couldnt find the researchers names and the publisher. However, for general scientific details about this, you can refer to:

"are you living in a parallel Korean universe?"

There seem to be many Korean universes indeed just from what I have read on Dave's. Laughing We do witness on this board that some people say they experience certain things all the time while others say they have never seen/experienced them.

My bad, Sareoksan. I have yet to meet one Korean who knows what and where Mount Everest is.
Have you actually went around asking many Koreans directly about this? Interestingly, I have yet to meet one Korean who thinks the tallest mountain in the world is Halla and does not know what Mount Everest is (Quite many may not know where exactly it is and would be not sure if its Everest or Erevest though). Try 에베레스트 산 if they dont get Mount Everest. Quite a few Korean professional mountain climbers have tried to climb up to the peak of Mt. Everest and were successful while unfortunately several never returned home alive. I think there has been enough news coverage about the mountain on Korean tv.

This is very groundless. Where do you even get all this confidence to say this? Where do you get this idea? From other nonsense posts on Daves that went unchecked? Its only such common knowledge that a-bombs (원자 폭탄) forced Japan to surrender immediately. I cant believe I have to talk about this. These are the keywords. 히로시마, 나가사키 원폭(원자폭탄) 투하. This is a big board so most of them may check this place eventually. We can all be wrong at times butat least lets not be so confident when we know we dont know well. Wink

You know you're Korean when...

-you rarely look in the direction you are walking.

-the biggest tragedy in you life is that your face turns red when drinking.

-you think it's hysterical when foreigners try to speak Korean.

Nope.......I did not make any assumptions about your nationality. However, it is evident that domglum, or whomever, is not capable (or does not have the balls) to post anything with credability.

But, you have to wonder................why is talk of Korea and Koreans such as this so common? It is not like people, who have never been to Korea, are saying this from afar.

Yes, Korea has done some amazing things in the past 50 years. But, what I don't understand is the attitude. For a country that REALLY has not contributed much to the world (Sorry man, but Korea is taking credit for what China did), spits on a country that is protecting them (whether you want to admit it or not), is very anti foreigner yet wants to be a world player, and continuosly blames others for its own shortcomings.......Korea sure does talk a lot.

It is insecurity. Koreas sense of nationalism is a self defense mechanism. When a government starts telling its own people......for example......."Kimchi is scientific" (which we all know it isn't.....just grubby vegetables used to get through the winter)......."Koreans are smarter"........"Koreans are a superior race".......etc. It is just looks ridicuous. Now, if Korea had made major strides in the past, contributing to the benefit of the world, it could be understandable (though not exceptable) to have that attitude.

Of course Korea has a good economy. When a country in a postition such as Korea, does not have to really worry about putting money in defense........yes, there is spending room. The ONLY reason why Korea is where it is today, is because of others who sacraficed and are still doing so.

The ungrateful, ethnocentric, unrealist, racist attitude of Korea is what brings on the complaints on this board. Sorry to say, but confucionism is outdated, and does not serve ANY purpose in a global world. You cannot mix that ideaology with the modern world.

And, it starts with Koreas E.S.L. industry. Koreans can talk all the shite they want about teachers but.......

1. Nobody in the world is hiring Koreans to come overseas to teach their native language (perhaps in small cases).

2. Depsite what Koreans think of expat teachers, we can get a job in our own country. I believe this chain of thought is due to insecurity, in order to overcome Koreas own misguided attempts to learn English. Memorzation is the way, and expats know this. But, Koreans don't want to listen, grow or accept this. So, what do they do? They put the blame on the expats, rathe then adapting.

3. Many expats come here not out of love for Korea (which Koreans like to pass on), but to see the world and embrace it.......something that most Koreans have yet to understand. Most expats come here for different reasons, but they do try to fit in with the culture, learn and adapt. Do Koreans do this in other countries? NO.......the majority of them do not. Teachers come here for different intentions.......but we all came here to do a job. Yes, many don't have experience. But, that is Koreas fault, by not regulating hogwans and recruiters. Lies.....lies......lies......
Education is education. I have met soooo many teachers who WANT to do a good job, who WANT to be a positive example, and who WANT to care about their students..................................and what happens? They are treated like garbage, and disregarded as a pet, toy, or second class citizen. KOREA HAS NO ROOM TO BE TREATING PEOPLE LIKE THAT...NONE. In fact, Korea should be thanful that people even come here.

4. Education: OK...if Korea has such a superior education system, then why do most college students want to go learn abroad? Why aren't the students actually graded on their performances....especially in English class? Why can't Koreans realize that simply cramming information in your head is not the way. Yes, Korean CEO's in Korea are big shots...........but only in Korea.

5. Koreans have a definite problem admitting ,much less acknowledging their flaws..........and REFUSE to have a discussion about them. Most expats I knew in Korea only wanted to learn why things work...some explanations. But, Koreans could/would do it............

6. Sorry to say, but Korea does have the worst reputation in the ESL industry, and doing business globably (China is catching on though). Do Koreans honestly think that is the fault of all he expats? Not hardly......not hardly.

7. Yes, Korea has one of the oldest cultures in the world....behind China, Egypt and Iraq. But, unless a country actually contibutes something to the world, while claiming to be superior...........it means nothing.

8. You claim (in some way) that you don't see this side of Korea. Well, you are living in Canada. Yes, you may experience some of the same things there as Korean expat.............but, you have not walked in the shoes of an expat in Korea. People complain for a reason.

9. At this point, Korea considers the U.S. more of a threat then N. Korea. If the U.S. was that immoral, to take over S. Korea.....it would have been done by now. It makes me sick to see your people behave in the manner towards those who have given so much for YOUR people.......only to be spat on. Yes, unfortunate events have occured with foreigners involved................but, would you like to know how many crimes are committed by Koreans here in the U.S.?

10. The anti foreigner attitude is pretty hard to miss in Korea. It is hard to get even an international debit card...........and international debit card for crying out loud. If that were to happen in the U.S. or Canada, that person can go to court........and rightfully so. That is just the start of it.....if you need more proof, here is some.........thanks to Real Reality.

11. Korea justifies its bad behavior by pointing the finger at other bad behavior.

12. Then you have your insecure gyopos who make random postings, with nothing to back up their gripes (not you, of course), dodging points, and not acknowledging counter arguements........the Korean way...we all know that. Jealousy is not a good coat to wear, and it will not get you anywhere.

I have told Koreans this before, and I will tell it again, to any Korean that reads this. Korea is your country. If you don't want expats here, then go to every foreign embassy, and tell them. If you dont' want the U.S. miltary here, then walk up to every soldier and tell them. If you dont' want teachers here, then I suggest you get in line, but make sure you say it to their faces. Have some balls!!!!! Don't hide behind the internet, or post from afar. Do it..............perhaps the world will get the point, and realize that Korea is not ready to join as a real player.

However, Korea is changing. Just over 50 years ago, Korea was a poor, poor country...people living in mud huts and shacks. Koreans don't like to acknowledge this, and that is understandable. So, I hope eventually.........Korea will get on track. Because it can be great! It has potential.........but potential is nothing if it is not used.

When expats who live in Korea see the "Korea........Sparkling" commercials, most of them laugh........because it is only a commercial, not the real deal in most places. Before Korea can proclaim itself as the "Hub of Asia", it needs to re-evaluate itself, look in the mirror and make some adjustments. We all know that is a crock of shite, and it certainley is not the hub of Asia.......................Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore.......THOSE are hubs.

So, lets just leave it at that....for now anyway.

However, thank you for posting some credible evidence by the way.........perhaps you should conduct a clinic to your countrymen/women on how to have a debate.

dmbfan

P.S. Oh yes, Korea is teaching its students (with its standardized curriculum) that KOREA won its fight with Japan. I've talked to several koreans on the matter, and they all say "Yeah, we (Korea) beat Japan".

Not hardly..........but, yes.......respect is given for the freedom fighters who faught against the Japanese....that much is certain.

You know you're a Korean when in public, you stare at white people, desire no personal interaction of any kind with them, but still want them to teach English to your kids.

You think it's acceptable to approach random foriegn strangers and interrupt their conversations, usually to utter some slogans in English such as 'Oh welcome to my Korea! Oh, where are you from, you know Beckham? You like to find Korean lady?" whilst all the time sniggering stupidly to your grinning friend, totally unaware or uncaring of the fact that the foriegner knows that you're taking the piss, even though you would never dream of doing this to another Korean.

Koreans are the politest people in the world - to other Koreans only.

As much as I would like to support that, I can't. Despite my ramblings, I have met some really polite Koreans......

My good friend works in Sunam, and over the years we both hung out with the night watchman. He is always polite, drinks soju with us, we try to get him to eat and drink non Korean things (he will occasionally partake)..........he is older, yes. But, I know at least one polite Korean whom I would hang out with.
