I'm reading the Korea Times and they run this photo/caption:

It seems to me it's big news to them someone in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reading their newspaper. "You like me! You really, really like me!" It just strikes me the paper is so entirely surprised someone in the corridors of power is actually reading them they they need to coo about it within their own pages.

Tomorrow they should do the same thing with today's paper. Create one of those dressing room mirror effects.

So, they mention it is resting on a table in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade...I guess they forgot to mention that it was carried in and placed there by a KT photographer.

The Korea Times often prints columns of pure, unadulterated twaddle by 'meditation expert' Roar Sheppard, and so has absolutely no claims upon calling itself a newspaper whatsoever.

AND in the pressroom (where the reporters wait for news bits) NOT in an office where someone in authority would be.

What is the deal with these press rooms and why is closing them a big thing?

My guess is they had a situation where they needed to put a picture in a hole, and didn't have anything better. Maybe they have some style rules saying at least one picture per page, or something. Most papers require a picture on the front page, or front page of a section.

They photographer was perhaps being creative, in a bored sort of way. Maybe didn't think the editor would be crazy enough to actually use the shot. But should have come up with something better. Even a person reading the paper would be better. Perhaps with an expression of jubilation on the reader's face.

Speaking of desperation, I once saw the picture a paper used when the famous Senator failed to show up to speak in person, instead addressing the audience by phone. The photo was of a speaker phone sitting on the center of the school stage floor with an arm holding a microphone to it.

It told the story.

In fact, it was the only story the Senator got.
