One of my favourite non-English bands are a Slovenian group called Laibach. Musically, artistically, politically I find them fascinating. They dabble in all sorts of styles from Industrial to Neoclassicism. They're a very controversial band because they incorporate a lot of fascist symbolism and imagery, but they're actually parodying facism. They are satirical. If you like experimental and avant garde music, you should check them out.

This is a cover of Queen's One Vision sung in German. Actually, if you understand the translation and see how they are playing with words and meanings, and toying with politics, it's bloody clever: Geburt Einer Nation

Tanz Mit

Das Spiel ist Aus

Atrocity Die Liebe

And songs they do in English:

This is a bloody interesting version of the Stone's Sympathy For The Devil

A cover of Status Quo's In the Army Now

A cover of Edwin Starr's War

Luna by Alessandro Safina - a rather pleasant blend of pop and opera.

I got a real taste for Manu Chao when I was hanging out with a Chilean in China. He sings in Spanish, French, English and possibly other languages. These were a couple of my favourites:

Clandestino

Bongo Bong je ne t'aime plus

There's so much fantastic French pop music I've heard over the years, but for some reason I can't recall any titles of the top off my head. It must be 7 years really since I listened to any, I suppose because French music hasn't taken off in China and SK, so there's no opportunity to hear it. Confused

Thanks for that BK! I've heard that so many times and absolutely loved it, but I didn't know its title.

Cheers for those! Wanted those for ages. When I worked in a restaurant with a bunch of Italians, we used to get pi55ed and stoned and listen to that stuff after work. Very happy memories.

This one - Bongo Bong je ne t'aime plus - has an identical hook to a Dire Straits song called 'Once upon a time in the West'.

Turk pop:

Gulsen 'Of... of': I think it was three years ago, maybe four, that you couldn't go anywhere in Turkey without hearing this song. A girl is complaining about this guy who chats her up, but won't put the final move on. The video is crap, except that Gulsen is quite good looking in it. She is also the subject of the single greatest frontpage headline I've ever read in legit newspaper: "I was bored so I had my breasts enlarged."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJGQUF3531Q

Here's something more recent from her, with a flamenco flavor, 'Canin Sagolsun'. The video is better - more color, and she still looks great:

Nil Karaibrahimgil 'Pirlanta': The biggest pop song in Turkey last year. Very cool percussion:

An old song by my personal favorite, Sebnem Ferah. She's moved in a more hard rock direction since. 'Yagmurlar' is a slow, pretty song. She has a great voice:

A summer hit from some years back by Ozlem Tekin, 'Laubali':

The best rock n roll band in the world right now, Mor ve Otesi, doing their best song, 'Yardim Et'. The video is just a fan compilation, so it doesn't really match the song.

Russian Pop:

Zhanna Friske - 'Gde-to Letom': Mindless summer dance pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpL4CG1Co3U

Gosti iz Budushchego - 'Luchshee v Tebe': More of the Same

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0vM0BxYB0Q

Katya Lel' - 'Moi Marmeladnyi': Russian pop is pretty much Russian pop.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBBtdVeCRDU

Except for Uma2rman, which is just odd. The song is 'Tennis Bol'shoi':

French pop: Real quick, gotta go to work:

Anggun - Cesse la Pluie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clySUDtQprg

Alizee - Moi Lolita

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDwKPGUIVME

Mylene Farmer - *beep* Them All
