| One can't presuppose that those who protest against the USA are the same who get citizenship for their children. Since Koreans are paying the rack rate for these births, it's rather good for business. |

They should have to swear an oath first. Such as..
1) I will not participate in anti-US protests.
2) I agree that Korea is not the most superior nation on the planet, which is why I'm having my baby elsewhere.
3) I promise to encourage my child ato ssimilate into society once he/she grows up and arrives in the US.
4) I promise not to show racist xenophobia against americans or other foreigners whom I encounter in Korea.
5) I promise to campaign for the rights to citizenship of foreign babies born in Korea, and of foreigners to live in Korea. if we are allowed to live in the west, I agree we should reciprocate and show a good attitude to foreigners wishing to live in Korea.
if they can say that and sign it, then let their blessed baby have the greencard. |

nautilus,
Should that oath be put in place before or after Americans agree to taking it also? There's plenty of xenophobia and racism back there, you know. Oh, and plenty of anti-US protests in the US, too. |

I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to be a Korean citizen either. I think it's pretty sad that the elite who control the country don't even want their kids to be citizens of their own country.
I say let them come. Let's see. Korea already has one of the lowest birthrates in the world. If all all their kids are born as US citizens, In about 30 years Korea will cease to exist as an independent country. We already have our soldiers there, so it'll make the transition to statehood that much easier. Dokdo is American. |

Ron Paul is going to throw out the 14th Amendment?!? And we thought Bushy was bad. |

| Yeah, I don't understand why they would waste that one single birth-day opportunity on making their kid a US citizen either. If I were to have children, I'd go to Europe and get them into the EU instead. That way when they are older they can freely choose to be valuable contributing citizens of which ever coutnry they like. Wouldn't it be great to be treated fairly and to participate equally in the affairs of your country of choice? |
You are saying that Europeans are more fair to their ethnic minorities and immigrants than are the Americans?
Have you ever been to either place? I know that the Yanks have a reputation for redneckedness, but check out small towns in France if you want to experience blank stares of ignorance. Spend a day in Liverpool. Or, go to NYC, LA, Miami, SF. |

| Some folks seem to think that all countries have the same citizenship at birth laws as the US does. They don't. |

Jus Soli shouldn't be applied to tourists or illegals. I have no problem with green carders, but why should someone who doesn't live there be able to get citizenship for someone who doesn't live there? |

That is the question...There's a big difference between coming and staying and coming, pushing out a kid and then high-tailing it out of the country....
But how can you tell the intentions of others? Someone can say they are staying, planning to leave to show off the kid and will be right back and GASP! never return.... |

How can you tell? Easy. Do you have a green card or citizenship? If yes, then so does the kid. If you are nothing more than on a student or tourist visa or no visa at all, tough luck. |

Which isn't really fair since having a student visa may push you ahead of the ranks with the new policy towards becoming a U.S. resident. A U.S. educated immigrant is a keeper so you can't penalize them for having a child while studying to improve their life...BUT I could be wrong... |

| Or, you can live in Canada where they won't have any room in their hospitals for you to give birth, so they send you to the US instead. |

Read the 14th Amendment.
One side effect is that when these babies grow up, they'll still be responsible for filing, and possibly paying, US taxes. So really, the US should invite more rich mothers to give birth on US soil. |

Those loopholes don't exist in the EU. It did happen in Ireland briefly, but when the government saw the blatant abuse of it, they closed up quickly.
Australia and Britain closed those loopholes about 20 years ago.
I don't know about Canada, NZ, South American countries...but the United States might be one of the only countries in the world that gives free citizenship and passports to 'anchor babies'. |
