|
|
We all owe Soon To Be Former Senator Larry Craig a word of thanks.
I now know I should not tap my feet while answering the call of nature in an airport bathroom, not that I ever did. Thanks Larry!
And I know I should not stick my hand under the stall partition when there is somebody next door. Thanks Larry!
I'm a little fuzzy on some of the other ones, as I did not read the news articles real closely. Perhaps they weren't graphic enough.
Something about not sticking other parts of your body through the partitions.
And something else about not placing your luggage in a way to hide what you are doing in the stall.
All good things to know.
Is there anything else I, or visitors unfamiliar with the ins and outs of American culture and jurisprudence, should know to avoid being arrested, or merely being beaten to a pulp?
I did notice once when stopping at a rest area in a Southern state that there were parked cars flashing their headlights at me while other cars drove around in circles, including a Sheriff's deputy. What's up with that? I thought maybe they were selling drugs. I didn't stay around long enough to find out.
Or maybe someone was campaigning for the Senate.
Any other advice on this or vaguely related areas of things not do?
Seriously.
I can think of some ways Koreans, or other foreigners, could get themselves in trouble. Big trouble.
But please try to keep it relatively clean, folks. |

When shaking hands, it's 1-2-3, let go! Don't fondle.
When sitting around having a friendly conversation, keep thy hands off the other guy's thigh, especially if the other guy is wearing shorts. Skinship is not universally valued.
When sitting very close, an arm around the shoulder is likely to be misconstrued. So is pinching the other guy's nipple when so draped.
When walking down the street with a friend, don't casually reach out and hold his hand. If you are going to hold his hand, really mean it.
When feeling exceptionally close to another guy, don't casually lean over and kiss him. It is likely to be misunderstood. Calling him 형 and saying you will respect him in the morning is not likely to correct the situation.
Above all:
Avoid saying, "It has been a lovely evening. By the way, would you fancy another f*g?" |

Im almost tempted to say if you are Korean, dont drive there.
But if you do, dont stop in the middle of moving traffic for any reason (like, to let your son out to go to school or to stop and talk to your ajoshi buddy going the other way). Dont use reverse on Interstate exit ramps to get back on the interstate when you realized you took the wrong exit, go through red lights, speed excessively where there are no traffic cameras around, or expect someone to pump your gas. Also, learn to use a road map. Learn to use turn signals. Learn that the left hand lane on the interstate is the passing lane. Learn that hazard lights are for when your car is stopped on the side of the road/not for letting others know when you see something that looks like a hazard. |

Chew your food with your mouth closed.
Don't spit.
Doing these things won't get you put into jail, but follow my advice anyway. |

Don't try to hold hands, or touch the inside of your "best friends" thigh, unless you both swing that way.
Don't hug or touch other people's children.
Don't tell people that you enjoy showering naked with your own children.
Don't eat off of other people's plates.
Don't try to explain to your boss that the reason you're not able to come in is that you're hung over.
Don't pressure your friends to drink after they've said they've had enough.
Don't critique your friends behaviors, in an attempt to help them improve themselves.
Don't ask black people if it's true that they really like drinking orange soda with fried chicken. |

It the places I worked in the US you didn't have to tell your boss about the hangover because he saw how drunk you were when you went home.
The racial stereotype that I was indoctrinated with as a child was strawberry soda. |

Don't try it without your own car to drive around unless you're going to New York or San Francisco.
Don't go more than 5 MPH over the posted speed limits due to strict police.
Don't run red lights and stop signs, again due to strict police and the fact you will get hit by another vehicle.
Don't ever do a left turn on red.
Don't ever bully pedestrians out of the way when they have a green or white walk signal.
Don't go the wrong way down ein bahn strasse.
Don't drive drunk or stoned. Don't even have an open, but empty beer can or bottle in the car, even if it was just trash and you didn't drink before driving. There is an open container law.
Don't walk the streets of inner big cities where you don't see offices, people in suits, and high styled places. You got real affluent areas and then real impoverished areas that are high risk for getting robbed or worse. Small towns are not so bad, but then you are in a car since you have to have a car to get around.
Do smile and have fun with all the many options you have in such a place like the U.S.A. as it is not all the same; each state is like a different country. You will enjoy all the elements of each country of world and a whole lot more at the most unexpected times such as driving in the Missouri countryside to find little Germany or Holland or down a city street to find little Korea or Vietnam. To bad there are not many pedestrian streets where arts, culture, and entertainment occur like you find in typical European cities though it looks like Europe in many parts. |

do not wear mickey mouse tee-shirts over the age of 12.
yes; criticise American commercial beer; but do not tell a brew meister in the US that all american ale tastes like sh#te; after all, he may be related to you.....if you are european.
When you smoke your joint outside...remember that it's illegal, so crouch behind a car, go between some buildings, or, for god's sake, go inside! Cops can not enter your dwelling in the US without a court order, probable cause or some dumb potheads permission.
If you are a catholic priest in the USA: please do not molest our children anymore.Sure, this is acceptable in other western countries, but recently, we have decided that it is not appropriate behavior. So, we may try to jail you, in the future, for such activity.
But, I have a solution: All pedophiliac Catholic priests should be sent on a mission to Afghanistan to convert the locals... Crusade style... good luck and god speed!
*ps-the laws that snagged the senator are vice laws; in my opinion, vice laws-making gambling, drugs, prostitution a crime - should be done away with.... who cares who you F666ck or how you spend your money????? but, he is a republican, so fyyyyck him. |
