Nashville Steakhouse Has Closed
September 1st was the last day. The bar will be redisgned and offer a smaller menu and movies will still be shown. I greatly appreciated the place. I liked the menu and the wait staff and its dignified yet trashy atmosphere.
Thank you to the owner and staff and good luck. |

Tragic. That place was truly an Itaewon landmark. |

That place never had any vinegar in stock. Hopefully the new place will. |

I just spoke with Skip the owner earlier this afternoon, getting a final burger fix there. He said that after 25 years, he was closing the basement restaurant so that he could have more time to play golf.
He said he didn't know what would happen to the basement space but that burgers would still be on offer in the bar upstairs (no steaks, though), and that they would move all their kitchen facilities up there. They have extended business for three more days meaning they will close for good on Sept. 4th. Their chili burgers are classic, for sure.
And so It'aewon continues to evolve, losing more and more of what originally made it unique and special in all its trashy, high-fat and high-fun glory... |

Gentrification comes in the sleekest forms eh? Bloody hell. I'm all for business owners selling out, it's their money, but damn. Itaewon will soon look like Gangnam from Gangnam Station up to Kyobo Tower. What'll be the point of even going anymore? |

Koreans have belatedly realized that It'aewon is far more interesting than most of the rest of boring Seoul, so they're taking it over now.
It'aewon used be be the one last refuges we foreigners had in Seoul, but now it's full of Korean tourists, making it theirs once and for all. Soon they'll have killed it off, just like they killed off Hongdae...
Korea for Koreans! Dae Han Min Guk! |

Yeah I was there last Sat the 25th and saw the note and was wondering why it was closing. Back in its day, it was THE PLACE to get a great steak, beef shish kebabs and of course their burgers. In the 90s every time we'd come to Seoul, we'd make it a point to go there for at least one meal and more often than not, more than one as there wasnt much to chose from them
It has though become a shell of itself in recent years, there are better steaks to be had (Al at 3 Alley just added a sirloin to the menu) at better prices and places have better atmosphere/service than Nashville does now. When I was there, there were mostly Koreans there and not many of them. A far cry from when he had a sign that said "No Koreans Allowed" and for good reason
I will remember it fondly though for all the memories though.
Thanks for memories Skip and enjoy the links!!!! |

Why was that? Were those dastardly Korean men stealing our women again or something? |

Let's just hope they keep the vegetable delight on the menu. |

Actually the Nashville Steakhouse will be open for three more days. They had planned to close on September 1st but decided to extend it for three more days, thereby closing on September 4th, 2007.
I was there on Friday, August 31st, and saw the sign about how September 1st would be their last day, and so I felt lucky to of gotten there just in time, so soon before they close for good.
And I went to Itaewon today, Sunday, September 2nd, and I saw that the sign with the "1" for September 1st had been written over with a black marker and the "1" had been changed to a "4." I was suprised and happy to see that the Nashville will be open for a little longer, and so that is where I ate.
Nashville Steakhouse's burgers are the best!

Geckoman, thanks for supplying the redundant information, you are a very good reader. An English teacher here, I presume?
Wo Buxihuan Hanguoren, Skip told me he had a "No Koreans" policy (unless accompanied by a big nose) until 1997, because there were too many fights. He said back in those days, Koreans weren't up to speed in terms of mixing with international society (too sensitive and all that), but that the younger generation here is doing much better these days... |

Skip came to my house in Arizona back in 2001! My father in law had a business relationship with his wife...and ever since we came back to Korea, I've been going to the Nashville for the cheeseburger & fries combo pate at least once every few weeks.
I remember the No Korean rule too. Last time I was there, the Koreans were too loud so I gave up on watching the movie that was playing. Besides me, they were the only other people in there, so that'll give you an idea of just how loud that table of 4 was, hehehe. |

Not the yokels where I live. Man, can't drink outside the mini mart near my uni without the pompadoured, pink-shirted pooves trying to show off their manliness and/or three words of English. But I digress, ahh Nashville, where I ate my first western meal here four years ago. I will shed a tear for it's passing. |
