Might have the possibility of a (non-teaching) job in Manila, whilst i like the Philippines I'm a bit reticent to move to the big bad capital.
Have any of you lived in Manila or can anyone recommend a good expat board? |

I can recommend a real interesting book:
"HEY JOE: A Slice of the City - An American in Manila" by Ted Lerner.
Essentially its a Jewish-American guy from Pennsylvania who after 8 years in Hawaii.. made a visit to the Philippines and never left. He's now a columnist for a newspaper and writes short stories of observations of Manila. He compiled many of his stories and made a book. Great book too! You can order it online - Amazon.com has it. |

The best place to live in Manila is in Cebu.
Over populated, high crime rates, expensive by comparason to the rest of the country, polluted, .....
Makati or out in the burbs but it won't be cheap.

Gigi Fellizar is an OK agent and is used by a lot of Fil/Am couples for finding rentals or condos.
There are lots of forums for expats or fil/am's in the RP. |

Anyone know much about the expat scene in Manila?
Mostly business-types or all kinds? What kind of businesses are most involved in? |

There's definitely not much of an expat scene. One think I loved about Manila was going around the markets and being the only white person. On the plane home almost all other passengers were Filipino overseas workers. The only expat I met was a priest!
I should think other expats are the usual mulitinationals/IT/engineering types. |
