I want to get my students interested in an English speaking TV show outside of class. I plan on using excerpts/clips from the show as a fill in the blanks dictation exercise in my standard lesson.

I just don't know what show to use. I am considering Lost or Heroes at the moment.

The students are all middle school boys, so Heroes might appeal to them although it seems to jump around a lot. Lost has Korean characters so it probably has built in appeal and it airs on TV here.

Any suggestions?

Dragon Ball Z are you serious?

I planned on getting subtitles too. I'm not sure how easy it is to get subtitles for animations.

ABC Kids Video Lounge. It's online and it's in English--well, sometimes it's in Strine.

Heroes

Yes, well it does seem to be Heroes. My managing coteacher's son is into it and she is really pushing for it. I have my reservations though on a few points:
1.) Is it even on TV here?
2.) I know there's a big Korean fanbase for Lost so I figured getting subtitles would be easy. If Heroes isn't on TV where do the kids download it and get subtitles.

Now the toughest part. I plan on using it as a fill in the blanks dictation exercise focusing on target vocabulary and phrases selected from frequency lists. Until now we've been using audiobooks and we usually stretch two minutes or so of audio into three repetitions of the material and answering the questions aloud for points. This usually takes a total of 15 minutes.

With the video I have to take the script apart in a similar manner possibly with dialogues and somehow format it all onto a single page along with a pronunciation and formulation section.

Any suggestions?

There's a couple of subs for Heroes here
http://www.gomtv.com/search.html?whr=0&key=heroes
eps 06 and 14

and

eps 08, 14 and 18

but try not to get confused with the Jet Li film Hero.

Isn't there some rather mature content in Heroes, like violence and sexual situations?

Same with Lost.

Would Seventh Heaven be a better choice?

That is a good point. How about Kyle XY? I've only seen 2 episodes but it is a ABC family show, so it wouldn't be raunchy but the story is still interesting (but probably not as interesting as Heros would be for middle schoo boys Smile ). Actually, the two times I saw it was here in Korea. If you are interested in the show, let me know and I will figure out which station carries it...

Dragonball Z or GT wouldn't be bad but I dunno about subtitles. You could also look into Naruto. I know that it is shown here in Korean but it's possible to watch it online in English somewhere....

I don't know how well your students understand/know English, but TV shows are chockablock full of cultural/pop references. It's quite hard for someone who doesn't have a good grasp on the culture to understand. Think about how many idioms and slang are in each of those shows. Think about the situations, like relationships, man vs. society situations, things that Koreans wouldn't be able to pick up on based on context with their preconceived notions.

That said, Dragonball Z doesn't have a whole lot of dialogue. But still, good luck. I had my highest level class, middle school kids, watch Ren and Stimpy's "Happy Happy Joy Joy" music video, only two minutes long, and it took an hour and a half to get thru it all. No one, including me, enjoyed it either.

A member of our community posted for some feedback on her blog. She's Mexican and did a super job using a tv show, to help students learn English. Look here, very user friendly and fine example of using Andrew Fields classtools www.classtools.net I like the clip about chili....

If you want to do a good turn and give her some feedback, here's the thread.

I hope you are planning on using English subtitles. Korean subtitles will be a waste of time as the students won't even hear the English.

Think about it - ever watch a Korean movie with English subs? I don't even hear the Korean, but when I watch it with Korean subs there's a lot more understanding and struggling going on. That's the way to go.

I need episode one by Wednesday. Anyone know any good sources. I know of a few internet cafes that stream it, does anybody know how I might go about encoding a streamed file? How about the machine's specs to do so, what would they have to be?

Chaz,

You might consider the Extra English series. Very well done and the students will understand it and that will lead to enjoyment. Workbook there too. I quite like what they've done and in Europe this series costs a penny and is creme de la creme. Go to the batcave, click the link at the bottom of the page, for a gander...
