Was it $20 million US cash??? How would the Taliban even spend that money? Its not like they can walk to a store or buy over the internet with Paypal. Maybe it was $20 million worth of kimchi.

Oh no. That stuff never goes bad! They could hide out in remote caves for years without having to come out!

Nonsense. Excepting the first two, they've had all those "problems" for many years. And they grew to be the world's 12 largest economy. And they've just signed a FTA with the U.S.A.

So I guess if they've had these problems for years and grown into the 12th largest economy there's no need to change or improve. Rolling Eyes

I think what's worse is that if it is confirmed that they did indeed pay $20 million, that the SK gov't has been lying and trying to cover up their tracks, while denying having paid.

Politicians lying? Impossible!

Thanks for your brilliant imput.

Maybe would just forget about it, and just be happy they lied.

All I'M saying is that the lying isn't the worst part. The example/precendent it sets for future kidnappings is the worst part. Politicians lie every day, that's commonplace. Theoretically sacrificing the lives of all the other hostages that are taken after this is not the sort of thing that happens every day.

Lighten up about the politician joke. You're liable to give yourself an anuerysm or something.

Korea Paid US$20 Million to Taliban

The Korean government paid more than US$20 million in ransom to Taliban kidnappers for the release of 19 Korean hostages in Afghanistan, Reuters and Japans Kyodo News said Saturday quoting a senior Taliban figure.
Both news agencies cited remarks by a member of the 10-man leadership council of the Taliban, which are headed by the elusive Mullah Omar. With it we will purchase arms, get our communication network renewed and buy vehicles to carry out more suicide attacks, the senior militant figure told Reuters. The money will also address to some extent the financial difficulties we have had.

Meanwhile, in an indirect phone conversation with Yonhap News on Sunday, a purported Taliban spokesman calling himself Qari Yousuf Ahmadi threatened to attack the Korean embassy or other Korean facilities in Afghanistan if the country does not keep its promise to withdraw all Korean Christian missionaries from the country by the end of August. Ahmadi said he had information that some Koreans remain in the war-torn country.

So, how many people do you think that 20 million will kill?

The Italians negotiated a taliban prisoner for hostage swap earlier this year. 5 taliban prisoners for 1 Italian hostage. The US looked the other way while the Italian PM got directly involved in the negotiations. This actually opened the door for more kidnappings.

CC, please cite where you protested what the Italians did on this or any other site.

When I move to Italy and start posting on Italian ESL forums, I'll make sure to send ya the link. Until then, I often find my interests closer to heartand home... like countries where I am actually living (Korea).

Did I say that? No. What I was pointing out and you completely missed was that if they have had these "problems" for many years and have not become an international pariah...then it is unlikely in the extreme that a few more years will make a difference. In fact the FTA suggests that if anything Korea is going in the opposite direct of "pariah".

But hey why let any inconvenience like actual facts get in the way of your angry rant? Carry on. Rolling Eyes
