Do most jobs pay on the 25th of the month? If so, is there a holdback on your salary? In Taiwan, they pay on the 10th but that is for salary up until the end of the previous month. How does it work in Korea??
Thanks! |

I can't speak for others, but I'm paid on the last day of the month for work up to and including that day. I know there are other arrangements, but I don't know how common they are. |

Thanks for your response. Is the pay date fixed in stone or is it a little flexible? |

Pay dates are different depending on where you are. Flexible- Depends on the employer, so ask them directly. |

In my time here, I've seen pretty much any paydate system you can imagine.
Curently, I am paid on the 17th for the previous month's work. I'm at a public school.
I've also been paid every two weeks for the work done those two weeks.
I've also been paid on the 10th for the work done te previous month. |

Most government programs pay on the 25th for the same calendar month.
Other PUBLIC schools (usually contracted outside of the main programs) often pay on the last working day of the calendar month for the month worked (1-31 gets paid on 31).
Public schools are supposed to pay on the previous working day if payday falls on a Sunday or National Holiday.
Hakwons used to pay at the end of your 30 day work period - if you started on the 5th your payday would be the 4th of subsequent months (last working day of your pay period). They usually paid a day late if it fell on a weekend or holiday.
Now, many (but not all) hakwons wait until 10 days AFTER your month has ended. This is often done to prevent runners by leaving a reserve of 10 days pay for the hakwon as a penalty if you leave (about the cost of the one-way ticket to Korea).
Some hakwons are now paying on a fixed calendar date (eg the 10th) for the previous calendar month (pay period is the calendar month and payday is on the 10th of the month following).
Hope that answered your query. |

Doesn't Korean law require that you get paid at least once every thirty days? This would mean that if a hakgwon tries to pay you 10 days late, as long as you complain the first time that what they are doing is illegal, I think you have a basis to complain....
Someone correct me if I am wrong....
I wouldn't accept a contract that had a holdback, but if you already did, I'm not sure if you are out of luck or not... |

I am in a public school and am paid on the 25th of the month for that month .... so from the 1st to 31st (or appropriate date) of that month ... If the 25th is a weekend or public holiday then I am paid on the previous working day ...
When you should be paid will usually be clearly outlined in your contract ...

If you're employed by the public school, they're supposed to be going by a fiscal month. I'm on the EPIK program and the fiscal month is from the 25th of one month to the 24th of the following month. My pay is deposited, as required by the City, into my bank account on the last day of the fiscal month: the 24th. If the last day of the fiscal month falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or national holiday, then the pay is deposited on the [i]last workday (not counting Saturdays*) prior to the 24th.
There is absolutely NO excuse to pay an employee late!
*No, I don't work Saturdays, but the finance stuff must work every other Saturday. |
