Been a Michigan fan all my life. Not shocked at all by this. I think people are making more of it than they should. All we learned is that App. St. is better than peope thought and Michigan is not that great and is out of the National title picture already. I'm not too upset because, I never expected Mich to compete for the NT anyway and I suspected they were not that great. They can still win the Big 10 (they won't) and they can still go to a 2nd-tier bowl (they will). Nothing spectacular, but under Carr, that's what we've grown to expect. Carr is a great coach if your goal is to win 9 or 10 games, but he only seems to have the team prepared to play 50 percent of the time. Mich is usually talented enough that not being prepared for 5 or 6 games a season, means losing 2 or 3. Last year, I thought he might have found his way back to that 1997 season (then came the USC thrashing). Even that year, when UM won the AP title, they didn't look so good against WSU in the Rose Bowl. Thanks to that weak performance, they lost the coaches' poll as Neb beat Tenn very convincingly. My point is, every year Michigan looks unprepared in a few games and I think their opponents can see it. Stewart Mandel of CNNSI is predicting this will be his last year. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_blogs/football/ncaa/2007/09/five-things-we-learned-this-weekend.htmlI don't care for Stewart, but in the past he has defended Carr and is generally quite slow to condemn coaches. I think he may be right this time. Carr may step down at season's end.
Anyway, someone here said that if they beat OSU, people will be able to get past this defeat. Well, one, they need to get past it a lot faster than that, and two, I'll be over it completely if they beat ND. I hate them way more than I hate the Buckeyes. In fact, the Buckeyes aren't even on my hate list. But ND? They're first and second on that list. |
Wow, nice self-assessment, many props. I don't think you need to worry about Notre Dame. I was just looking at their schedule and they realistically might not win until their 7th or 9th game.

Raises hand.
While it's obviously a huge, crushing loss, as others have mentioned, once they beat Ohio State and take them out of the National Championship picture, this season won't be seen as a total loss...
Michigan is still one of the better teams in the Big-10.. they'll work their way back into the rankings... eventually... |

| Isn't Chad Henne 0-3 against Ohio State, though? Not sure if that's a guaranteed victory. |

Is there a better reason for him NOT to win now?
That's probably the only big game left of the season for him...

| MIchigan is unranked now. Good for the voters. They should do that sort of thing more often, especially at the season's beginning when ranked teams have not yet proved themselves worthy of being ranked. |

So, after the Michigan debacle of epic portions last weekend they just changed it so D I-AA teams are now eligible to be included in top 25 voting.

The Associated Press said Thursday that lower-division schools -- that means you, Mountaineers -- are now eligible for its 71-year-old poll. |

I don't see this ever happening though. There is a reason this was a huge upset, it just never happens. At least they will be eligible now. |

I thought it to be a little extreme that Michigan was dropped completely from the polls. Appalachian would probably beat most of the teams in the Big Ten and the ACC, so I don't think that was fair. They are a two-time defending national championship team, after all. |

here's the bet then.. If Ohio State wins, I'll use your avatar for a MONTH... if Michigan win, you have to have a Michigan symbol and/or flag as your avatar for a month..
inflated egos and players with something to prove are going to play a HUGE part in that game...
deal? |

| I did my BA and MA at Appalachian State University (Boone, NC). In my 10 years in Boone the Mountaineers were a pretty solid team. Way to go Black and Gold! |

You gotta be kidding me. App State beating Michigan is like USC beating the Indianapolis Colts. 99 out of 100 games, Michigan demolishes a Div 1AA opponent.
There hasn't been a single team ranked in the top 25 to get beaten by a Div 1AA opponent. EVER.
Let me repeat. EVER. This is one of the greatest upsets EVER in college football.
App State would lose by 50+ points if they went up against any of the other Top 25 teams in Division 1A. |

I've been a Michigan fan for as long as I can remember and I'm not terribly surprised that App. St gave the Wolverines a game. Michigan usually plays down to lesser competition. Does anyone the Wolverines having trouble, yet beating Ball St. last year? Ball St. is one of the worst teams is DI. But, Michigan went out week in and out and chalked up 10 straight victories until losing to OSU in what was a fantastic regular season game.
Michigan usually starts the season slowly, or it has since under Carr, who is a great coach and a seemingly better man, but he doesn't seem to prepare his teams as well as other coaches. Should he be fired because of this loss? no way in hell, but I do think that Bill Maretin, the school's AD should start to look for a replacement from outside of the program. I don't think their defensive coordinator, Ron English, should be tapped as Carr's successor, although I'm sure he will be. He led a great defense last year and didn't prepare his boys for a D IAA team in the opening game. I'd definitely interview for the job once Carr retires, which will most like happen at the end of this year. But I'd also look at candidates from SEC schools with and without Michigan ties.
App. St. is the 2 time defending champ of DI-AA or whatever it's called now. They would beat about half of their D I oppenents if given the chance to play. So while this was a huge upset, possibly the biggest ever, it doesn't come at a total surprise that a DI-AA team would finally defeat a Top 25 teams. That said, DI schools should only play DI schools as well as the only schools ranked or voted for in the polls. Now the NCAA thinks DI-AA schools should start getting votes. And they should, only if they become a DI school and play other DI schools week in and out.
For those interested, the Michigan game against Oregon will be on sopcast tonight at 4:30 am in Seoul. I know I'll be up watching, hope you other so-called Wolverine fans will be up as well.
GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
