I went to Nong Hyub bank today to pay my bill so thought i'd ask for an application card for a credit card. The manager had said to me last time i was in that i could apply for one.
I went to the desk and asked the woman if i could get a credit card application form. After some initial confusion she told me that foreigners couldn't get one. I explained that the manager had told me i could. As had the English department in head office. She asked her friend could foreigners get a credit card. She said they couldn't.

I asked her to call head office and confirm that. She phoned three different people and finally gave me an application form.

As i walked out i noticed a sign proclaiming Nong Hyub to be 'Super Bank.'

If you work at a University or public school get a Samsung credit card. They are much better at dealing with foreigners. Screw the banks.

I gave up trying to get a credit card here. I tried every bank and CC Co. to no avail. I'll stick with cash and T/C's. Evil or Very Mad

I not only have a Nong Hyup credit card, I have a VIP one. Very Happy

You had the bad fortune to run into a clueless employee. IMO, I have been treated MUCH better by Nong Hyup than by Kook Min--they were awful. Chances are, that employee will now bend over backwards to make it up to you.

Yeah i think the plebs that work at the bank didn't realize that i could apply for a CC. I don't think they were being deliberately racist. They were just a bit clueless.

I did the same i would have if i was back home. Asked them politely to get on the phone and ask someone who knows.

You must be pretty cool to get a VIP card though. Wink

When I opened my account at KEB, they offered a 1 million Won secured credit card that would require 1.4 million Won security deposit to be locked in until I closed the account. I was not about to get into any deal like this as I would be paying fees for them to have my money and then I thought it might make it hard or time consuming to get that money back when I am ready to leave. You don't need credit cards in Korea as their credit system has nothing to do with other countries systems so trying to establish credit here is senseless unless you're F2 visa and plan to stay indefinitely.

No need for a credit card as it's useless outside of Korea anyhow, go for one from your home country connected to your home bank account where you send money to from Korea. This is so booking flights and making Internet purchases are simple and doable.

When I called the number at the above link, they said I had to apply in person, but I'm not so sure that's true. Also, I know you're not in Seoul, but here's the info for people in Seoul.

Solleung station (green and yellow line).

Samsung--I was told that I was approved for a credit card and I'll get it in a week or so. PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS and UNI PROFS can get the card. Bring everything--passport, ARC, bankbook, contract, school's phone number and address, etc.

Honestly, I think all at least one of the clerks spokes English, but I had my boyfriend with me, who did all the speaking.

To get to the Samsung credit center, go out...exit 10 (I think, the one towards Samsung station) and walk straight. Go to the Samsung Financial Building, floor 8. Hours from 9 or 9:30 until 4:30.
