I just watched "My Sassy Girl" for the first time last night. It was so great. I totally didn't expect a Korean film to be so good. I'd rank it as one of my all time favorites.

Can anyone recommend any other korean movies with similar caliber?

"Oasis" was brilliant. So was "Peppermint Candy." Both have the same star. "Shiri" (or however it's spelt in English) is a good action flick. The movie "Teacher Kim Bong-du" was both funny and moving and had better acting than most Korean films. There's an older film called "A Flower Petal" that's very excellent and very sad. I cried a few times while watching.

If you like atmospheric horror, THE PHONE is quite good.

Not similar and it's a little old but JSA rocks.
It's actually on OCN a lot these days (in Korean)
But you could get it on DVD if you're really motivated.

My wife is a gangstar was pretty good.
Also, for low brow sex comedies Sex is Zero was funny along with Jungle Juice.

"Chingu" was pretty good. Consensus is it's one of the best Korean films, according to my students.

I liked
korea's first amendment. Prostitute runs for congress after a coworker is brutally raped. Challenges people not to look down on prositutes and to treat them like human beings.

the tutor uni girl tutors a boy who is the same age but in highschool.
At first they hate eachother but then fall in love.

Jingu (Friend) Supposedly true life gangster movie.

amensty day (?) two men break out of jail only to find out they were given amensty. Spend the rest of the movie trying to get back in. This and tutor were the funniest korean movies i have seen so far.

I married the mafia. Two sons of a godfather trick the hero into marrying their sister. I was told this movie was sold to hollywood. Its rumoured that Deniro will play the part of the godfather.

Why not 1? All I remember was it had Ahn Song-ki. Can't remember anything about 2, didn't even know there was a 3.

So Joe, I bet you'll know the answer to this one: Few years ago there was a film about a family that starts an inn on a hiking trail out in the boonies, NK spy kills himself in on of their rooms and to cover it up they kill other people and then kill other people to cover up those killings...want to see it again and can't remember the title or who was in it.

Also, anyone know how I could score a copy of Kore Sanyang I (Whale Hunting)?

I liked Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance(Boksunun naui Geot) myself, but it's definitely a cultish kind of movie. Felt to me more like Requiem For a Dream Korean style(especially with that eerie soundtrack) than any of these lovey-dovey comedy things.

Speaking of those, there's a real romantic's movie in "Byeol"; it's very simple and doesn't offer a whole lot of innovation, but it's the same simplicity that makes it a good "feel-good" movie. It also stars that famous dude who was also in Chingu and The Champion.

Ddong-ge(Mutt, to put it nicely) has one of the stupidest fight scenes in existence. The fight scene in the jail was just sloppy.

The Tutor was alright, as is Jopok Manura(My Wife is a Gangster), JSA, et cetera. There's a lot of decent movies, but they usually seem oddly paced to me.

Dude, I loved My Tutor Friend, but you have to enjoy the cute korean thing.

and I liked when Sex is Zero, because the sad parts give it replay value, instead of just watch it once and forget about it

Chip-eu-ro (???) is wonderful. it is the story of an old woman and a young boy. the old woman is not an actor - just an old village woman. it is filmed in her real house. very touching, funny - a must see. shows how rude the young korean generation is.

another must see is -

Ch'ui-hwa-seon (???) - an historical story based on the life of an artist at the end of the Choseon dynasty - late 1800's.
