SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Pyeongchang has declared its intention to bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, a third consecutive attempt after the South Korean city narrowly lost two previous bids.
The government of Gangwon province, to which Pyeongchang belongs, said it made the decision because it needs a "growth engine" for the province, and it expects unspecified "more favorable conditions" in the next bid.
"Hosting Winter Olympics still remains the yearning" of Gangwon province, the local government said in a statement Monday, calling the Games a "springboard" for the region's growth.
In July, Pyeongchang, located 175 kilometres northeast of Seoul, lost the 2014 Games to Russia's Sochi by a margin of four votes. Four years ago, Vancouver won the 2010 Games after beating Pyongyang by a margin of three votes. |

With an error like that, I bet they'll lose again
Considering the current furor over the Tour de Korea madness, I don't see people seeing this bid as representative of the Olympic spirit but that's probably overreaching... |

There are still farmers here, but the main industry here in Pyeongchang is construction.
All they think about is Seoul giving them money to build stuff.
Pretty soon it will be wall to wall pension houses and then the retirees will run out of money or die and they will be left with empty houses and no taxes to pay for all the roads they built.
Soon all the natural beauty that attracted the pension houses will be gone. A lot of it is gone already. |

Doubt there'll be much snow up there by 2018. Maybe they'd better try for the summer Olympics instead. |
