Foreigners smoking weed in Kangnam?

They had to be gyopos.

For all the anti-drug stuff in Korea, I've never smelled more pot out on the street than in Korea.

What a stupid idiot! How can esl teachers be taken seriously when you got people like this.

I've smelled something similar to weed in many places in Korea. I also smelled it near a compost heap at my old job in a zoo's horticulture department. In that case it had to do with certain types of plants decomposing, and I'm sure there's a similar cause here.

It also might be a type of potpouri or candle. I walked into a small furniture boutique in Bundang a couple of years ago, and the faux-weed smell hit me right away, and I saw it was coming from a candle in the middle of the store.

The social stigma attached to drugs is pretty high here, obviously, so you're not going to find people smoking out in the open (or smoking weed much at all).

Yes, I'm gonna throw in on the "I've smelt weed" in Korea. I know enough about drugs to put a Phd to shame and trust me, it smelt of dope.

I always smelled it in very blue collar areas.

Who gives a flying f**k?? If you aren't smoking it, then it's not to much to brag about!

"Hey Billy I was a walkin by Mr. Smith's house the other night, n I heard Mrs. Smith makin a sound like a homeless cat!"

"No way, do you think they were....y'know....???"

"Could be Billy, could be..."

"B...b...but Mrs. Smith is a SUNDAY SCHOOL teacher!"

That's what it sounds like. Frickin fools. Of course people are blazing. It's a worldwide phenomenon. Just like everything else. Except ketchup on pizza. Korea pretty much has that one cornered.

So are you saying there's a secret underground segment of the local population here that smokes weed?

A secret society that all us foreigners are unaware of?

Walk around the streets of Amsterdam and you'll get a good sense of what herb smells like when walking pat a building filled with it.

I've smelled something similar in Seoul, but I'm quite sure it wasn't weed.

I've never smelled herb on the street in Korea, and I just can't believe Scotticus when he claims he smells it all the time. I think that might be your own jacket that you're smelling, dude. If so many Koreans were smoking herb, you'd be able to buy a large bag of potato chips here.

i've noticed that weed smell, but i think it's some plant or something

btw does anyone know of a way to get stoned in korea without weed? i reckon with all the chinese medicine about there must be something in those shops that gets you wasted

Chairman to Manager: "I think we gotta make some cuts"
Manager to Chairman: "So you want us all to be dirt poor?"

Since smoking that stuff here is uber-illegal, I find it real interesting how instead of "smoking" stories, everyone is sharing "smelling" stories instead. Smile

I'll chime in here with the "Could swear I just smelled weed" camp. I'm not saying it was weed, or it wasn't, but it smelled exactly like weed to me. And although I was never much of a toker myself, I grew up exposed to the smell from a few uncles who didn't give rat's ass where they lit up, so the memory of that smell was ingrained into me at a very early age.

In any case, if what I smelled wasn't weed, it was indistinguishable from it. And I'm curious what it really is, in that case.

i agree with spin on this one. koreans smoke. for sure the farmers smoke the stuff. maybe it's not exactly an urban phenomenon, but the country-side must support the habit.

and i know the farmers smoke opium. i snapped this in gyeongsangnam-do:

and for a parody of koreans smoking dope, check out this movie:

Thanks "Billybrobby," cause I care if you think I'm full of it. Considering all the people who have come here saying the exact same thing, maybe YOU'RE the one who's full of shit. And in reference to your jacket joke, I've never smoked in my life, but I've had a ton of massive stoner friends. I'm quite aware of how pot smells. I also never said I smelled it "all the time," I said I've smelled it multiple times on the street(a lot more than back in school).

Just so everyone is aware: Drugs are super illegal here. This isn't Toronto or England, you can't just carry a small amount for personal use. If they catch you with drugs here, you get locked up. So it makes a TON of sense that if you're smoking, you don't tell people unless you completely trust them. I personally know a Korea or two who smokes. Much more so than in the West, you need to know the right people if you want to score anything.
