Hey guys,
My wife (who is a gyopo) has a tricky situation at her school. Basically, she was one class short of getting her diploma at a technical institute. She wrote down that she went to this school on her resume, but did not say she graduated.
The other day, her boss asked her for her diploma because "The education board is getting really strict nowadays, and we want your original diploma. If they come by to the hogwon and don't see a diploma from you, they can shut us down."
Surprised by the request, she said that she didn't know anything about having a diploma sent over. Technically she didnt lie, but her school is under the impression that she has a diploma. Being on an F-4 visa, she did not have to have a diploma or degree as a requirement to get the Visa.
Would just like some friendly advice on what she should tell her school as I'm quite out of ideas myself.
Thanks guys

If she's giving the school the impression that she has a diploma when she doesn't, she's lying...are you trying to split hairs? |

Hmm
Tell her to go and get the last credit for university. No wonder there are so many Koreans that fake their diplomas and say they went to "Yale". I have no respect for you or your wife. |

Man ease up on the guy.. He said his wife listed the school on a resume just like anyone else would. He didnt say she graduated from the school or anything like that.. Shame on the Hogwan for not asking for a diploma before hiring her.. or checking the resume more carefully..
I think i would need more details before i condemn them both.. |

Thats just idiotic. Would you list a company on your resume because you visited their office once or twice? Same thing, really. Listing a school on a resume means you GRADUATED from that school. |

She should have a degree to work legally at a hagwon, regardless of nationality. It's both her and her employer's responsibility. However, many Koreans without degrees teach at hagwons. |

I knew a girl who told her hagwon she graduate from Ohio State but had only finished 2 years. The hagwon even had her up on the website stating that she had graduated with a communications degree or something. She had an F4 and taught here for 2 years without any problems, though I felt like I shoulda turned her in |

Is that stated anywhere in an employment act? I thought it was different for F2's and F4's. |

Thanks for the replies so far.
She never once said that she graduated from there, but she listed it on her resume as a place she studied. This never seemed to be a problem.
If she legally obtained her work visa, and is employed by a hogwan, I can't see how this is in breach of any violations. Yes, I think the school should have asked for a diploma or a degree, but they didn't. |

I'm sorry, but gotta disagree here. I attended a university in Europe for a year, but did not graduate from there. Are you saying I shouldn't list it? Of course I should list it! I attended there, and stated that it was a year abroad in an exchange program.
For the university that I graduated from, I list my degree and date. For the school I didn't graduate from, I list no degree and that shows I didn't get one.

It's a rule from the MOE that says all teachers in private school have to have bachelor's degree. Even the Korean teachers have to have degrees to teach in hagwons.

So how would you list it then? I would assume you would clarify that you attended it but didnt graduate. Right? Otherwise, you would be lying.

So you show that theres a distinction. The OP's wife apparently did not. |

She went to two schools and listed them as places that she studied at, and made no mention of graduating from there. It never seemed to be a problem when they had the interview on the phone.

If I see a resume and the words Princeton or Brown on them Ill assume that the person graduated from those schools. Its the job of the person writing the resume to clarify that they didnt graduate from those schools. Your wife didnt do it and she is guilty of misleading her employers, not to mention being guilty of working at a school without a degree, which is illegal. |
