I started a thread about how SOSFA is not allowing foreigners to compete in the amateur 2007 Tour de Korea. It's gone.... I wonder why. |

Yes, if you think, as an expat living in Korea and paying taxes, you should have the same rights as Korean citizens, please get on that website and let them know that racial discrimination is a bad thing all over the world, including south korea. |

Hey "Pest", this is the guy riding yo' 5900 these days,
Yeah, I saw the post on here yesterday, and was typing up something to add. It was there at about 11:30 last night, but when I went to submit, it wasn't on. I guess standing up against discrimination isn't something we can talk about here. Maybe we can only post about how wasted we got at Itaewon one night...Or how to woo Korean girls.... |

I am guessing that post is somehow connected to the disappearing thread here.... |

I'd like the mods to explain it. Last I saw it, it was quite civil, especially for around here. |

I'm no expert on this race, but I can tell you this for sure:
foreigners are racing in this event - but upon receipt of invitation only - so it seems.
I met the Drapac Porsche team from Australia on the plane on the way over to the event. Good people. There are also blogs and entries by New Zealanders and other racers who have participated in past events which you can find online without much searching.
Now, if the question becomes: should anyone be able to enter, or at least apply to enter, I'd agree that's a fair question.
On the other hand, if the organisers want to be assured of the highest standard of competitiveness in order to expose their riders (Korean 'elite' presumably) to the best, I can understand their hesistancy in accepting entries from the uninvited.
Whether that hesistancy is fair and valid is also a good question. |

Ethan,
This is about the AMATEUR version of the Tour de Korea. They invited 3 foreign teams for the pro race (not top level teams by the way), but, in effect, told us foreign amateurs to **** off because we are foreign....well, and probably because Pest can beat all of them.... |

I don't woo Korean girls. I *beep* them. After I get wasted in Itaewon first, though. |

yeah, this is right. this was all in the deleted thread. SOSFA is required to have a professional international race in order to be eligible to send competitors to the olympics and world champs. They found some tier 3 pro teams in Asia (tier 1 is the highest, 3 the lowest) and invited them to come race here. Even though they're racing against the lowest-level pros, they can never seem to get a Korean guy to win. hmmm...
this year, due to increases in road bike popularity and sales around Korea, SOSFA had an amateur version of the Tour de Korea. At first they were allowing anyone to compete. But then, at the last minute (after quite a few of us had gotten an entire week off from work to do the race), they decided not to allow any non koreans or women into the race. the reason is mainly that they are afraid the Korean competitors will get beaten by a foreigner. They think this will cause those Koreans to get discouraged and quit the sport.
I had posted an email from a rather nationalistic and defensive Korean guy who works for SOSFA about the race... saying foreigners who dont like the SOSFA policy of discrimination should just go back to our home countries. Im not up to doing it again, though...
I think another important thing to mention is that most of the Korean amateur racers dont necessarily feel that allowing foreigners is bad (well, at least the ones I talked to,... but then again they didnt seem to surprised to find that foreigners are being banned, soo....). The race organizers have done a really terrible job of organizing the amateur race in many other ways, as far as I can see... perhaps its just a case of some foolish old Korean men who cant tell their buttcracks from their bikes trying to be all-powerful and important? |

Hey bailsibub (what the heck does that mean? tell me next time we're out on a ride). Yeah, .... well, you know the libel and slander laws are different/stupid in Korea... so maybe they were bribed or threatened by someone? Dont know. |

The first letter you received was pretty disgusting, so I hope you at least posted it on other forums, and showed it to whomever else you're telling. |

Anyone find out why the original thread was pulled? I hate when that happens with no explanation....All these vanishing threads can't be just from a software glitch... |
