English teachers arrested on drug charges

September 06, 2007
Police are investigating 23 people, most of them foreigners who teach English here, for smoking marijuana and trafficking in the drug, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced yesterday.
The police detained three on trafficking charges: two Canadians, 28 and 30, and a Ghanaian, 34. They could be sentenced to 5 or more years in prison if convicted.
In addition, the police booked three Britons, five Canadians, 13 Americans and one Korean. The maximum penalty is a fine and 5 years in prison.
All 23, except for the Korean and the Ghanaian, are English instructors at hagwon, elementary schools or universities. The Korean is a girlfriend of one of the teachers.
Some of the teachers were intoxicated while teaching students, said Lim Chang-muk, an inspector at the agency. Officially they made about 2 million won at schools, but they made as much as four times more outside of their regular jobs, which violates their E-2 visa guidelines.
With an E-2 visa, foreigners can only work at the organization that sponsored them. Most of the foreign suspects hold an E-2 visa.
The suspects obtained marijuana and hashish from suppliers introduced through their colleagues, police said.
The police said they confiscated 620 grams (1.4 pounds) of marijuana worth 13 million won ($13,860) and 0.7 gram of hashish.

Haha good. If you're still getting high at work in your late 20's or older, you pretty much get what you deserve. Unless you're a rock star or Tommy Chong, but some of them aren't very f'in bright either.

Yea, someone smokes weed, so that merits five years of jail time. Who gives a rat's ass if someone wants to smoke. Alcohol causes a lot more problems and no one seems to condone it. I still drink alot, but this is a fact.

Apparently, the Seoul Metropolitan Police do.

And it's not the smoking that they're in deep dookie over, it's the trafficking.

Having one-and-a-half pounds of pot is just asking for it. If they are only getting 5 years, I think they are getting off easier than they would for trafficking in the U.S.

People who use drugs are losers. I hope they are convicted and get the maximum sentence.

I would like the see evidence that they were smoking before classes. I just don't trust the police on this story.

Well they're idiots for doing what they did.

But come on do you seriously support a maximum sentence (or any sentence at all) for people smoking herb?

If you look at it from a moral perspective it's just wrong.

Yeah the teachers arrested were stupid, but I'm not about to join the mob is calling for justice on a law which I strongly feel is unjust.

You are one of the few people that D.A.R.E. got through to. Congratulations for letting the government think for you.

1.4 Pounds cost nowhere near 13,000. I truly hope the police and the legal system realizes that.

For some really good 'dro in Texas you can skate through a QP (1/4 a pound) around 1k. Sometimes if it is something that comes around once in a blue moon like Strawberry Cough, Blueberry, Chronic, White Widow, White Rhino, etc.... you might pay 1200 for a QP.

Once you get to the 1 Pound range you get a bigger price cut and it should be 3500 or under. That's more negotiable and depends on the connection.

And this is for the top of the line stuff. (Not NYC Sour Diesel mind you, that's just too much cost and only from cloned plants so harder to come by)

While I hear marijuana is expensive and I wouldn't indulge in it in Korea. Though prices are bullshit. Just poor inexperienced journalism. You're getting into low end kilo prices there. Though I'm sure snowmen in Korea are few and far between.
