Just wanted to know what people think my chances of getting money out of my recruiter are?
Basically I was told by the recruiter that I would be within walking distance of my school, im not. I have to catch the subway everyday to work, its only 1800won there and back everyday, but over a year that is going to add up, to around 430,000won!
My school are refusing to give me a traveling allowance, as they told the recruiter that the school was a subway ride away. The recruiter simply lied to me. I have asked the recruiter for some kind of compensation but he is refusing to pay anything.

Advice please?

Recruiters lie. It's a given. There are tons of threads on that.
If you want your 43man won, take em to small claims court. But go to the small, small claims court.

When you lose, kick yourself for not asking the school directly where the apartment is.

I suggest that you get a lawyer and sue the recruiter.

I think this is one of those unfortunate instances where you'll just have to chalk it up to experience and let it go. Two dollars a day does add up, but the damage isn't an amount that should cause you to start considering your legal options. Sometimes things happen that are beyond anyone's control, and no one wants to accept responsibility. In this case, it sounds like the school is ultimately responsible, either because they mislead the recruiter or lost access to the apartment within walking distance.

Get a lawyer. Sue his a$$ off. Get your 500k won and pay your lawyer double or triple that.

If you are just beginning your first year here, then you need to relax. This is a small thing, although it seems substantial now. If, at the end of your first year, the only thing you have to complain about is the cost and lost time of a couple of subway rides each day, you can count yourself very lucky. There are quite a few posters here who wish they had nothing more exciting than that to complain about.


Recruiters:
Their first goal is to find a teacher for every job opening that comes their way and get a commission.
Their second goal is to place every teacher they get, somewhere, anywhere, and get the commission.
Beyond that, you have to remember that the school pays them, so they are working for the school and NOT the teacher.

My recruiter has told me that my apartment is walking distance but I'm pretty lazy so I intend to get the bus if it's too far.

Walking distance is a bit vague - there are people here in Scotland that walk a good 20-30 minutes to walk (I get the bus if it takes me more than 10 minutes)

I just think legally they could probably argue that your apartment is within walking distance even if you get the bus.

I'm just thinking it is amazing that someone is complaining about spending $2 a day to get to work and come home. Try to do that in America. Owning a car, putting gas in it, paying for insurance ...

See what I'm holding here between my thumb and my forefinger? It's the smallest violin in the world, and it's playing a sad song just because you have to get on the subway ... exactly like about 8 million other people in tihs city manage to do somehow every day.

95% of the teachers I know have to take the subway to their job. In almost 8 years here, this is the first time I've I've heard someone complain - and about the cost, of all things.

$2 dollars a day? That's a grievous injury to you?

Recruiters lie. Sometimes, also, they just tell you things they don't know for sure, but they make it sound like they do. Oh, and one more thing : faeces occur. Most of us find a way to deal with the smell.
