Actually I was wrong by comparing them to North American kids. I am Australian and compared to the kids at home they are fat and lazy. There aren't as many fat people in Australia full stop. Probably from the rigorous P.E. we had to do for years.

Not all American kids are fat, pudgy, ugly, and stupid. Many American kids grow up to dominate in the world of sports. By the way Tae Kwon Do SUCKS! Every wanker in this country has a worthless black belt. (There may be a few exceptions.)

Yeah, the black belt oesn't mean sh*t in Korea. Even the fat, stupid, and ugly taekwondoers have them.

Yes,the Korean's got to the semi-finals of the World Cup last year. And as matthewwoodford wrote
"getting to the final four of the world cup is no mean achievement."
I agree,in normal circumstances.I think all the people who actually watched the korean games can tell you that they had a little help along the way from a referee or two. They didnt get there just by skill.
As for kangnamdragon saying that they could beat the US or Canada, well, thay are hardly two of the biggest names in world football, are they?

This is simply a gross generalization. I'm ashamed this thread has gotten this far.

It's like witnessing a group of retarded kids in the playground and labeling a whole country retarded.

Does it really matter if the Korean soccer team needed Hiddink's guidance to succeed in the World Cup? It was the Koreans, and not the fat netherlands coach on the field pouring their guts out, wasn't it?

Do you guys even know much about sports? Korea whipped the Europeans in Fencing (yes, FENCING) in the last Olympics. Korea dominates in sports like short track speed skating and archery. Wanna talk about hand-eye coordination? Thought your students look bad...try and watch a white guy attempt to play ping pong. It's like watching clowns at a circus.

Well i'm doing my bit for the next generations of stumbling, wild Koreans- playing 5 mins of football at the start of every lesson with my kindy kids- I reccomend it; loosens them up and relaxes them.
I think Koreans have a lot of natural athletic ability, same as they seem to have artistic skill,- but their general upbringing so neglects and fails to develop it...good, hard exercise is necessary for kids and teenagers to grow and develop well physically- and it benefits them well into later life.
Although I smoke like a chimney now and have done for something like 15 years, I can still easily keep up with and often beat non smokers in a jog, race, or game of volleyball etc. Why? because my early years were one long hard slog of almost daily, rigorous exercise and sports in the sunshine of Africa...

I think the answer to the first question would be a resounding "NO". The original post was about CATCHING A BALL! Using success at soccer (unless you are talking about the goalie) or other sports where this is not part of the game misses the original point.
I've noticed this, too, and I think there is a simple cultural explanation. Korea is not a culture that involves "tossing" (one's cookies in the street, excluded). For example, in the US you could ask your friend to, "Toss me a beer." We do a lot of throwing, to save steps or time or just because we like throwing things. Remember Confucianism dictates respect when transferring an item from one individual to another. Your students pass you their exams with both hands, you accept with your right. A younger person gives his business card to an older person with the left hand supporting the right hand. Friends on equal terms pass from right hand to right hand.
I think throwing something to someone is actually anathema to the local culture. I recall reading posts about hagwon teachers who have tossed candy to students out of friendship having been accused of winging sweets at their charges little heads. They just don't throw things outside of an organized baseball game or the like, and as a result, are not very adept at catching things.
As an example, to illustrate the difference between the use of "will" and "going to" or present continual for expressing future plans, I toss a marker to one of my uni students. It's always a slow, easy toss, with eye contact before so he knows something is coming, if not what. When they see the marker leave my hand and head towards their classmate, the others let out an exhalation of surprise and shock. One would think I had just stabbed the poor kid.
Long and convoluted point simplified: They don't throw stuff very often, so they don't get good at catching stuff.
At least that's my dos centavos.

glowstickgirl.
Some of what you said then was utter crap.So what, you say if the Koreans needed the fat Dutch guy to help them along the way to the semis of the World Cup.Before the fat Dutch guy,as you like to refer to him, came along, the Korean football team was hardly setting the world of football on fire was it?
Second point. You claim that this is all a gross generalization.Well, what the hell was that that you wrote about watching white people try to play Ping Pong.Well, let me tell you this.In England when i was in High School, one of my friends was the national table tennis champion for my age group.Hardly the stuff for clowns.
A touch of double standards on your behalf me thinks!!

umm...perhaps if you've been paying attention to the thread, you would have noticed that the discussion has migrated to bashing the general athletic ability and coordination of koreans...not just "CATCHING A BALL". so, please, keep your "resounding NO"'s at bay before jumping the gun again. get with the program...

can you please write in standard english? i can't understand half of what you're trying to convey.

i'm sorry, but to the asians, English ping pong is a joke. i'm surprised you're even trying to use that to support your argument.

Kimchikowboy: Interesting theory, it's certainly the best and most credible yet to explain why koreans can't catch..I'll be a bit easier on them now, i think you're probably right.
As you say, they instinctively look shocked when someone throws something at them...saw it again today...

Yes, Koreans are perfect and none of them are overweight. They all get plenty of activity outside the pc bang, never eat fried chicken, McDonalds or candy, and they all do Taekwondo. Where the hell have you been? My kids are just as fat as any kids in the states...
[/sarcasm?]

And now we see the difference between selective populations and broad overgeneralizations. thanks for playing 'I am an @sshole who can't distinguish between a group of koreans and all koreans". Class dismissed.

I like kkb's theory, sounds plausible, if a bit simplistic.
