Thanks to wonderful weather my printer caught some water and the electronics are fried.
I need a new printer, and i don't mind spending some money on it.
I would like one with good mileage and a decent variable cost.
any ideas? |

I have the printer in the first link, the C5180, really happy with it. Copies very fast and doesn't use too much ink if used on fast mode. Prints photos nicely. I was advised to stick with HP over Canon because of the ease of replacing the printer heads on HP over Canon. |

More than a 100 pages per week, eh...........definitely not an ink-jet then. You'll be popping in those cartridges every month at 15,000 a pop...at least.
As said before, a small office, non-photo, laser printer. Never used one of those so can't recommend a model. Try Cnet.com for reviews. |

I'll also be buying a printer soon, so thanks for all the information here. The HP Laser printers look nice.
I have a question. The last printer I bought a few years ago was an Epson inkjet. The problem was that the ink cartrages had a chip with a counter that would make the cartrage stop after a limited number of prints, whether the ink was out or not. And if you were out of one color, the whole printer would stop until you went and bought more Epson ink. So then some Russians made a little software widget to stop the Espon counter; but then Epson made a new chip, etc. etc. I feel like I am in a spy ring arms race when I just want to print some pages from my computer.
So, would getting a nice HP Laserjet get me out of this ink cartrage delima? Do they just print until they are empty, or is there some counter to force you to by more new cartrages.
Needless to say, I sure can't recommend Epson.
Thanks, Drew |

No, not completely. You will find the HP is a better printer. The cartridges are almost always available at staples or the other stores. Sometimes you will find some good deals when buying in pairs or with photo paper.
If you are using your color printer daily then you should just simply run out of ink. There is software that guesses at your ink level, just always select new cartridge when reinstalling the cartridge. If you are using it on a weekly basis expect clogging, this will require cleaning the cartridge, I just run mine under luke warm water.
Laser printers use a black toner cartridge that is a powder dry ink. The cartridge last quite awhile. |
