This is my second year working at a public elementary school on the GEPIK programme. I'm not sure whether I was paying any taxes last year as I never received wage slips. I requested one recently and noticed that I'm paying income tax and inhabitants tax. I am from the UK and thought that for the first 2 years of working in public school, UK citizens were exempt from paying taxes. Can anyone else out there from the UK advise me on this.

I am not from the UK but you are correct in not needing to pay income tax in Korea for the first 2 years .. teaching in a Public school.
I think that you should also expect to get a pay slip every month from your school (I am also with a GEPIK school and I get one every month)... It shows what has been deducted each month and gives a good way to check that no mistakes (like yours with tax) have been made. I would suggest getting your CT to talk to the accounting people in your office ... They should also have no problem in giving you copies from last year as well ... You would definitely be within your rights to do it ... and if you want a non-threatening (to them at least) way of asking for them - tell them that you need them so you can prepare your UK tax return. They should have no problem with that ... and will give you a chance to at least get the full picture ... and help you decide what you need to do.
I am sure that someone on the board will confirm what you need to do as UK resident to sort out your tax problem

Ask the admin office. They have your pay slips on file in the computer. They will print them out at your request. They usually do NOT hand them out unless you (or your co-teacher on your behalf) request them.
You are exempt from paying taxes for your 1st two years IN KOREA (not 1st 2 years on the job) provided you are at a public institution.
Get your teacher or admin to look it up in the Korean version of the foreign teacher handbook (the one your co-teacher is supposed to have).
You can also call the liason at the GEPIK office and get it straightened out so you stop paying taxes (if you are) and file for a refund from the tax office. |
