I'm making this thread because I have several female-specific questions and while there are tons of topics about what people think of women in Korea, there doesn't seem to be much about being a woman in Korea.
1. Clothes: What sizes do they come in, and what is the NA equivalent to whatever system they use? All the topics about attractive women going to Korea and suddenly becoming hambeasts who can't fit into any of the clothes are bothering me. When you say you are "curvy" and can't find clothing, what exactly do you mean? Curvy is an incredibly vague word. I want to see some numbers for the sizes available.
2. Shoes: Same! Tons of complaints about lack of sizes, but what sizes can you get? No one ever says.
I live in Saskatchewan and the shopping here is absolute garbage. I don't want to "stock up" on crappy, ill-fitting clothing only to find that there are much better things available once I get there.
3. Dating to Learn the Language: Korean girls date foreign men for English practice. How much luck would a foreign girl have "using" Korean guys to learn Korean?
4. Drinking With Your Boss: Many topics about this, but female posters seem absent. Are (foreign) women expected to pour massive amounts of booze down their throats at social functions, or is this a guy thing?
5. Tampons: I heard they were hard to find. Is it true? Actually second thought, I don't care. Just tell me, can you get the OB brand? |

Draz, what city will you be living in? What size are you? Sorry to ask but the definition to "curvy" is relative. |

I don't know about North American sizes, but I find I always seem to fit into the size (clothes and shoes) they have on display in Korean shops. I have borrowed clothes from Korean teachers in the past and they have been too big.
But I think I might be a bit smaller than the average Western teacher. (However, there are certainly some large wrestler-style Korean women around, so clothes have to be made for those who aren't anorexic.)
The biggest problem you will probably have is with underwear. Bras simply won't fit unless you are smaller than an A-cup.
As for the drinking. Women are treated no differently to men when it comes to drinking in Korea. I have been witness to some rather embarrassing scenes involving my very drunk director, and more than once I've seen Korean female co-workers passing out in gutters in front of their boss.
(Soju is pretty vile, but it also looks like water, so it is sometimes possible to pretend you are drinking when you aren't....) |

I'm 5'9", a size 6 US, and I have trouble finding things that fit. I can wear short sleeved shirts, skirts, and capri pants made here, but I"m at the top end of the scale. In skirts/pants I wear the biggest size that is usually availabel. In tops, I wear on below the biggest size available. One: I'm tall, so I can't buy long sleeve shirts here b/c the sleeves are too short Two: I have no ass, but I do have curvy hips, so most pants don't fit. Korean girls have NO hips. Three: of course most pants are also too short.
2. Shoes: Same! Tons of complaints about lack of sizes, but what sizes can you get? No one ever says.
American Size 8 and below is easy to find. I'm a size 9, so I can soemtiems buy sandals and tennis shoes (in the men's section), but nothing else.
I live in Saskatchewan and the shopping here is absolute garbage. I don't want to "stock up" on crappy, ill-fitting clothing only to find that there are much better things available once I get there.

No idea. I"m married.

No, you can get out of it usually as a woman.
5. Tampons: I heard they were hard to find. Is it true? Actually second thought, I don't care. Just tell me, can you get the OB brand?
No, but you can get playtex easily in big cities.[/b] |

I have D cups and wear a size 12 or 14 dress at home. 14 in the cheap brands, 12 in the midrange, 10 (or even 8 ) in the high priced ones with vanity sizing.
I can't buy pants here, my hips and bust are the same size. I don't even try to buy dresses or tops because most are frilly and ruffled and the last thing my boobs need is EXTRA crap there.
I can buy jeans and shirts in the men's department.
I just have things custom sewn for me for cheap in Thailand, Vietnam, etc.

Shoes are measured in mm. Try to find some shoes of your own to compare. I can't find women's shoes over 245 mm. I wear 255. I can buy Cons.
Shoes--same thing about tops. Most have bows (WTF is up with bows on grown women) and I wouldn't be caught dead in them anyway.
I really don't think most shoes here are high quality.

Well, there was a guy on CL a while ago looking to put up a girl. I'm sure you could exchange sex for Korean with him.
Why not just do a language exchange?
Fact is, you gerenally need to LEARN some of the language before any sort of language exchange is feasible. And people find that whatever meeting the first language is in (date, friend, whatever), that's what the relationship is in. Korean women who "use" men have at least had English in school. Have you had any Korean?
I won't even get into the aspects of why I think Western men have an easier time dating here than women, since you only care about using someone.

I've never been expected to drink as much as the guys, but those forced parties generally suck.

And tampons. Don't forget the tampons.
Maybe she'll like the ruffled/bowed shoes and clothing then. |

At least in some circles, religious beliefs easily exclude a person from partaking in drinking. |

I'm 5'5" probably about 145 pounds. I can buy shirts here but apparently I have a long torso so a lot of shirt ride up on me. I can buy jeans here as long as they are baggy since not only do I have hips, I actually have a backside.
2. Shoes: Same! Tons of complaints about lack of sizes, but what sizes can you get? No one ever says.
I'm a size 9/10. I buy sneakers here and have occassional success in finding non sneaker foorwear but it's pretty rare. If I need some snazzy, I usually ask my mom to pick up a pair of shoes and ship them over. The shoes here are pretty damn ugly anyway...
3. Dating to Learn the Language: Korean girls date foreign men for English practice. How much luck would a foreign girl have "using" Korean guys to learn Korean?
No idea. I'm dating a Bulgarian
4. Drinking With Your Boss: Many topics about this, but female posters seem absent. Are (foreign) women expected to pour massive amounts of booze down their throats at social functions, or is this a guy thing?
I have had to drink my fair share of booze but it really depends on the boss. My last boss was really cool and had social functions that involved food more than drinks since they were after work and we were all starving My current boss has only invited me to 2 office parties and I pretty much ate and drank nothing but I had excuses and no one seems to hold my lack of drinking/eating against me.

I buy playtex because that's all I seem to find here. Never seen OB. |

underwear: if you can find anything above a B cup it will be overpadded and overpriced. Victorias secret does deliver to Korea
Shoes: about an North American 81/2 is the largest you'll find in most places. There are a couple of shops in Itaewon that carry larger sizes, and reportedly you can get good shoes made there for cheaper than you'd expect.
Even if the Korean styles fit you well, they tend to be ugly, so I wouldn't plan on doing a lot of shopping there. That said, I've got at least 3 or 4 items in my closet from Korea which I love.
Tampons- bring'em. OB won't take up much room in a suitcase, and I've heard reports that the local ones are pretty poor quality |

My 2 cents:

| 1. Clothes: What sizes do they come in, and what is the NA equivalent to whatever system they use? |
Unless you have small boobs and no hips, you will have problems with some of the clothes. Back home I would wear a size medium, but I really can't work most of the shirts here because my boobs want to bust out all over the place. Same goes for pants. In the immortal words of Sir Mix-a-lot, my waist is small but my curves are kick'n, so pants never work for me here. However, I've bought lots of skirts here that fit me quite nicely, and a few tops as well. I haven't figured out the sizing quite yet, but I wear a 95 in tops. What that 95 means, I have no earthly idea. But it's roughly equivalent to a medium in the States.

If you wear larger than a size 8 expect to never find shoes. EVER.

Maybe you could find a Korean dude who's interested in using you as well for English lessons, but I wouldn't recommend it. There are lots of nice, date-able Korean guys around (although some people here will disagree with me on this point). But if you're not interested in dating them for more than just learning Korean, just take a damn class.

I have never seen OB brand tampons. I've seen Playtex, but only in bigger stores like Homeplus. There's a brand called Tempo available in most grocery stores. I've used them a couple of times, and they're okay. But if you're picky about it, bring your own. |

if you are a "small" US size (which is probably the same in canada), then you'll be a medium in korea.
shopping for clothing at the places that sell clothing on the street in dongdaemun or ehwa, will give you one size fits all stuff.
i found that the shirts i bought in dongdaemun/ehwa tended to be a little tight in the bust/shoulder area.
for reference i'm 5'3 and about 110lbs.
pants were a hit and miss for me.
my thighs are larger than korean womens, but moving a size up gave me pants that were too big in the waist. (again this is me shopping at street places and not department stores)
[quote2. Shoes: Same! Tons of complaints about lack of sizes, but what sizes can you get? No one ever says.

my US shoe size is 7-8 depending on the make.
shoes in korea tend to top out around 24 or 24.5 cm(?). and that's the size that fits me. (i did most of my shopping for clothes at street places and not "real" stores, so there may be larger sizes in "real" stores)
if you're worried about shoes, buy one or two pairs of work shoes, and one or two pair of regular shoes and bring them with you.

are you looking to date, or are you just looking for korean practice?
you can accomplish both. go to a club in hongdae or shinchon (harlem, zen bar, etc) with a friend, get on the dance floor and wait for a guy to come, or approach him yourself.
you could also put up ads in yonsei university saying that you're looking for a language partner, if that's all you want.
the korean guys that i met while in korea, were more than willing to talk with me in korean. and if you're taking a korean class, then i'm sure that they'd be happy to help you with that too.

not really sure how it is in korea, but in japan there are many opportunities to go out with co-workers for drinking.
basically, if you are sitting next to a "top" person you pour them a drink and then they pour for you.
at some point everyone might start going around the room greeting people and pouring them drinks and talking, if you want to join in, go for it.
when pouring drinks, you should take the hand that's not pouring and touch the wrist of the hand that is pouring, it shows respect.
if you don't know what i mean, when you get there look around at (some) super markets, fast food places, etc and watch how they hand your change back to you.

uhh...i don't use tampons.
but i think they have them.
they also have pads. a pad's a pad...
there's a brand called "white" i think. it's either owned by "always" or similar to it. |
