I'm a sucker for English language movies on cable here, given that they have the enormous advantage over the rest of the fare of being in English. I have watched some movies I would have burned my eyes out with a red hot poker before watching back home, and have actually enjoyed or found bearable. But even I have my limits.

Titanic kept showing up for awhile. Anyone here able to actually watch it? Each time it popped up, I tried my best, but the best I could do was about four minutes. I did watch it once, not too long after it came out. It seems to me the more you get to know this film, the more repulsive it becomes.

Yet there are posters on IMDB that describe it as:

Complete perfection,

Masterpiece underrated,

An Epic Masterpiece.

A heart-breaking, sweeping story of love and passion.

Another underrated masterpiece!!,

the titanic is the most amazing movie ever and best scenes,

Down Right AMAZING,

Quite Simply the best movie of all time,

Best movie EVER!,

Amazing movie. Also perfect.

the great movie from James Cameron:the best director,

etc., etc., etc.

And then there is:

One Of The Worst Movies What Ever Produced,

Lame.,

Shame, shame, shame on you, James Cameron,

Cameron sinks this ship.

Are there actually real human filmgoers who write this purple prose of praise? Do you think perhaps James Cameron hired a PR firm to pump up the online reviews (as I suspect has occurred with some other royal turkeys), or do you think Cameron just sits at home and generates these reviews himself?

Does anyone here actually like seeing Titanic, say, 10, 20 or 30 times, as some posters seem to do?

I had a male student who was about eleven who said Titanic was his favourite film. When I asked him why, he said because it's "fun." It was explained to me he thinks the part when the ship is sinking looks like a lot of fun.

I've never sat through the whole thing but I've probably seen every minute of it at one point or another. I won't call it a bad movie despite being too melodramatic, but I wouldn't put it down and say it's awful, just not for everyone.

i could never be bothered to watch it, it's about 3 hours long, and not much really happens, but for 12 yr old girls i can see why it's good, 3 hours of Leo being all romantic set in period clothes

i think that winning 20 od oscars was one of the best indicators of the oscars becoming irrelevent

It's not a movie you can watch a second time. It was ok with the modern day shot of the computer graphic demo of the ship sinking, the suspense up until and a little after it hit the iceberg, and when the guy who fell and dinged his head on the propeller.

But a second time is out of the question. Pure boredom.

The only part I remember is the guy smacking his head off the propellor. The local museum a few years back had some artifacts on display from the Titanic. Pretty neat display.

Yeah, its one of those movies where when you find out that someone you like thinks its good cinema, then your respect'o'meter plummets a notch or two.

...and that Celine Dion song. Christ. Anyone else think she looks like a hamster?

Hahaha. Exactly. Anything they recommend after as being "Great!" and you're kind of like "But, aren't you the person who really liked Titanic?"

I can understand sappy romantics liking the movie, but I'd taught a few guys in their 20s who rate it as their favorite Hollywood movie. WTF?!

I liked him in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? But maybe acting with Johnny Depp just makes everyone better...

I envy you. Wish there was a safe method of deleting it from my memory and recovering the time I spent watching it. Any ideas?

I saw it in Bangkok when it originally came out. Worth seeing once for the special effects, but I've never bothered watching it twice. Lots of women in my office had desktop wallpaper with Titanic themes for years after. Bit much for me. My sister watched it repeatedly too. Obviously the romance side of the story appeals to women.
