pulled pork barbeque
corn on the cob (New World)
New England & Manhattan clam chowders
Cajun cooking
TexMex (it's not Mexican)
pancakes (not thin like crepes - the buttermilk kind)

I've always said American food is the best in the world. And I'm Irish.
Why? Because America is a country of immigrants who have brought their national cuisine to the new world. Then they found that the good stuff like meat and diary foods are much cheaper in the States so they could put a lot more into their dishes.
Eating in America is like getting the best of world cuisine on steroids. |

"American food" is too general. Regional cuisine is easier to define--like Philly cheesesteak, Maryland blue crab, Maine lobster, TexMex, California Organic, Southern BBQ, Wisconsin cheese, New England chowder, Lousiana Cajun chicken, etc. Regional cuisines are often tasty and (can be) healthy. Unfortunately, we have a tendency to think "bigger is better" about everything (i.e. if fried is yummy, then MORE FRIED is BETTER).
If you want to talk about what "American food" is, then in general it is coated in grease and fried or very meaty or cheesy and huge or drenched in hi-fructose corn syrup and processed. It's very comforting, very fattening, and very addictive. This is why we Americans get fat. |

totally disagree with that
england is better because we have the melting pot thing, but we aren't over the top like americans
pizza vs curry
pizza has become a truly american food, but american pizza is completely americanised, the bread is like fried bread, american pizza is big and greasy, italian pizza is quite healthy, it's based around the tomatoes.
indian curry is/was unpalatable for english people, so the indians who came to england adapted it to be milder and more meat based. but it is still the same principles,
you can get curried chips, but curry in england is still curry, not a parody of it like american pizza |

Have you been to America? The best curry you experienced in UK is there. The best donar kebab you had in England can be had in America. Face it. It is the mecca of international food. |

I'm pretty sure Hotdogs are American. Though I guess they could be considered a kind of sausage, which would make them German or Polish, but I don't consider them the same as sausages.
TV Dinners are definitely American.
Oreo cookies
Steak WITH A-1 Steak Sauce
Jack Daniels
Smores
Soda
Rattlesnake sausage
Microwave anything
Popcorn?
Doughnuts?
Rice a Roni?
Italian food has certainly become a big part of mainstream American food. Growing up, we ate a lot of Spaghetti, Ravioli, Lasagna, and Fetuccini. |
