I had dinner at Kraze Burgers in Itaewon tonight. I was starving when we sat down to eat, so that might have had something to do with my first impression, but I thought the food was pretty good.
Had the K Basic burger for 4700 won (burger, bun, lettuce, sauce) and added grilled onions for an extra 200 won, a side of fries for 1500 won and got about 10 krinkled cut fries!!!! (a full order woulda cost 3500 won I think) Burger wasn't bad, if small and the fries were tasty, but a ripoff for what you get. Soda was 2500 won. Damn. All in all, with tax, my meal set me back about 10,000 won.
My friend ordered the chili cheese fries which were pretty tasty though ridiculously expensive (5900 won I think) and portion was small.
Service was excellent. But what's up with 10% VAT that's added onto your bill?
I guess the burger's at Smokey's are supposed to be better? How much are their burgers? And how do you get there?

So which should I try at Lotteria?

Sorry the K Basic is 4900 won - so I guess my waiter threw in the grilled onions for free. Whoopee. What a guy.  |

Apologies, i was being flippant. Lotteria is probably the worst burger joint you will ever have the misfortune of visiting (although i still visit there quite often for their Mega Big Paprika burger). |

I read in Lonely Planet that the owner of Lotteria, a Korean, chooses to live in Japan. What does that tell you?
He opened up Lotteria restaurants in Japan too, so the poor Japanese have to tolerate the food there too (and many do because in Tokyo if kids see a fast food restaurant with any vacant tables, they jump in there regardless of the food). It's hard to find any fast food restaurant in Tokyo during peak hours with empty tables.
If Lotteria is Korea's answer to McDonalds, (if you visit Japan) you should eat at the Japanese burger joint called Mos Burger. I swear it's the most delicious burger chain on the planet. McD's and BK taste like garbage next to Mos Burger.
Actually, Kraze Burger and Mos Burger are founded on the same concept. They use fresh beef and have good tasting fries.
However, Kraze Burger is way overpriced. I paid 13,000 won for a cheeseburger, fries and a coke and the portions were small. At Mos Burger, the price for that is a reasonable 700 yen (6000 won).
If you live in Seoul, I'd suggest you go to the Smokey Saloon in Itaewon. You'll still pay a lot, but get better food than Kraze Burger.
I predict when Koreans figure out how much they're being ripped off, all the Kraze Burgers will either lower their prices or close.
Especially with the return of USDA beef to Korea, there's no more excuse for the ridiculous prices at hamburger joints. |

Yeah my growling stomach (only been 3 hours since I ate) is demanding a full plate of fries next time...the portions really suck. Seriously...10 fries for 1500 won?  |

If you really want to fill up with some wonderful food, why don't you go to Taj Palace for their Indian buffet? For 15,000 won, you can eat 'till you're good and full. Taj Palace 02-790-5786 |

Both are equally great. People I know are split saying one is slightly better than the other. Others say that it depends on the dish. One restaurant will nudge past the other.
Wazwan has a homey atmosphere because it's small and located next to the Mosque in Itaewon. Has a neighborhood restaurant kind of feel.
Taj Palace has a more upscale atmosphere. It's only 3 months old so everything is new inside.
Really it depends on your personal taste (with your mouth and eyes) which one you like better.
I go to both for variety.
Only Taj Palace has the buffet on Saturdays and Sundays. While excellent, keep in mind that in any restaurant, the buffet is not as good as made to order dishes. That said, the buffet is an economical way to sample their dishes. I do the buffet when I haven't eaten all day.  |

kraze burger - tiny burgers that are mediocre.
smokey saloon - giant burgers that are really good and cost about the same as kraze, maybe a chun-won more.
choice is yours. |
