Korea is a very fast changing society (which makes it so interesting), so books about Korea, especially travel guides like the Lonely Planet, tend to get outdated very fast if they're talking about social mores and things like that.
On the "There are no gays in Korea" issue, last time I read a English book about it it said that Koreans still think this way. But 4 years ago(!), I was listening to a Korean talkback show on the radio about the numbers of AIDS cases in Korea. I can't remember the exact figures, but the woman from the Ministry of Health being interviewed said that of the 1000 or so known cases, a third or so contracted it from homosexual sex, and the remainder from heterosexual sex (there are too many of the drugs that require needles in Korea). Neither the interviewer, nor any of the taxi drivers or housewives that called in asking questions, ever disputed these figures.
I see no reason not to find those people I listened to unrepresentative of Koreans as a whole. So, in a whole 15 minutes, I learned that Koreans no longer refuse to accept that there can be such a thing as Korean homosexuals, nor that they think that AIDS is a foreign gay disease that doesn't concern them. Was a real eye-opener, and I sure as hell didn't buy the next edition of Lonely Planet Korea when it came out. |

Could you be a little more specific? If you mean what progress has there been since I heard that radio report, I can't help you sorry. I heard it by accident, and after living with 4 gay prostitutes back in New Zealand for a year, it'll still be quite some time before I'm ever interested in gay rights issues again!
Having said all that, I soooo miss the music. God, Korean dance music is such bubblegum crap...but i digress.  |

It is true that they used to think that, but I don't think they do any more. I
think that it came more known when that entertainer came out a few
years ago. I am sure there were a lot of really surprised people then.  |
