I can't take this anymore, I think I may have to off myself, or just leave the Korea...

Last night, I was at a bar filled with Koreans. I was with my American friend.

The entire night, we had people talking to us (even women), toasting us, getting up and getting food from the buffet for us, the DJ kept asking us what music we wanted to hear, I mean, the place was packed, why pick on us? Why was I getting treated like a king, when all I wanted to do was drink and mutter to myself?

I'll tell you why - because we have white skin. My friend and I were utterly appalled once we came to this conclusion.

Don't these Koreans know any better than to try and make me happy when I go out? I swear, if I had a fridge, I would never leave my apartment (except to go to work and take out my used tissues - those things stink the place up like there's no tomorrow).

I don't think this is discrimination. I think it's positive discrimination.

Welcome to being the celebrity of the event!

It makes me nervous too, but I had some very positive sit down get togethors with Koreans who welcomed and invited me to dinner. All eyes on me and all talk about me which did make me uncomfortable, especially the heavy soju drinking and smoking man who was confused due to a foreigner not fitting into his scheme of things. Everyone else where cool though, just too much attention.

Often, kool educated half English speaking Korean dudes want to take video interviews with me when I meet them in public places.

I went out to Junam lake yesterday and met really cool conservation agent like guys who invited me to thier party last night at the lake. We ate, watched videos on a big screen, and talked. It was an all night party, but unfortunately I had to leave to go call the states to see check my mommas status in the ICU at a big hospital in Columbia, Missouri. She is not doing good. Since learning of this, I am really coming to appreciate the special qualities of Korea and how it's been a real unique life experience being afforded an opportunity like this.

I don't know why but the OP reminds me of the SNL skit where a number of Blacks were talking about how awful it was for the Whites back in the 1950s to play in their own Basketball league.

They treated you like celebrities... and you are complaining??

How about being refused entry into a bar or restaurant in the first place because you are foreign... now THAT would be cause to complain. (and has happened to me before.)

It even could have been genuine friendliness too....although I doubt it. Likely they were just making a show of having some foreigners in the place ...as in "This is such an INTERNATIONAL bar type place...see? Korea Spark-a-ling!" "Now all we need are a few black people to come in (not too many of course) while we play our Hip Hop and we will be REALLY cool!"

And its probably not about you anyway...it's about them. For example..."If I'm cool with Foreigners... the other KOREANS might respect me more. Korea Spark-a-ling!"

Yeah, its weird and a bit pathetic...but be thankful you were at least on the positive recieving end of the attention...for now anyway. Next week it could be totally different.

You're not the only one that was shocked at that.
