This vid is 12 mins of a presentation by Dr Tom Van-Flandern. Van Flandern holds a doctorate in astronomy from Yale University and founded Meta Research, an organization that researches astronomy theories that conflict with mainstream paradigms. Van Flandern is a former chief astronomer, US Naval Observatory.

My summary: In 2001 when the Mars Global Surveyor had photographed 0.1% of the surface of Mars at high resolution Dr Van Flandern asserted:

* Beyond all reasonable doubt, the face on Mars is an artificial (built) structure, presumably by an extinct Martian civilization. NASAs previous pictures, debunking the face hypothesis as an optical illusion, were scientifically incompetent at best, perhaps fraudulent.

* there are other clearly artificial structures on Mars (including what appear to be glass or metallic tubes), and, given Mars Global Surveyor had photographed only 0.1% of the surface of Mars at high resolution, one can reasonably assume these things are all over the planet..

* Mars appears to have vegetation (trees, possibly still living there). So, not only was Mars occupied by beings now extinct, there may be life on Mars still living there.

I want to see these pictures of "trees'.

Nothing exists on Mars. All you have is a few shapes and structures created by meterite impacts.

I suspect we will have to assign your esteemed scientist to the looney bin before he starts communing with extra terrestrials.

BS

Look at the other picture of the face.

Sure there may have been life, even intelligent life, on Mars. But this is not the proof.

There are plenty of loonies with fancy degrees in this world.

Go to this website, called "google":

http://www.google.com/

In the rectangular box, type in the words "face on mars." Click on the box labeled "Google Search." Look at the pictures.

But what do I know? I'm just a loser "Hagwon teacher" in Korea, like everyone else on Dave's. (Actually, I'm not.)

Can you make out the alien face in the cloud? I've sent it to nasa for their extra terrestrial investigations unit.

Have you seen the vid yet, Nautilus? Your first reply in this thread clearly meant 'no'. I suspect life on other planets threatens your geocentric, anthropocentric, theistic view of reality. Laughing Our Solar System is a microscopic part of a galaxy that is 100,000 light years across and containing 200 billion stars. The universe has millions of such galaxies and likely millions of planets containing life. It's far from unreasonable that Mars was once inhabited and its inhabitants exterminated by a cataclysm similar perhaps to what happened to the dinosaurs. You do believe in the dinosaurs...right?

Anyway, is the scientific reasoning that led Dr Van Flandern to the conclusion that the best explanation for the 'face' is that it is artificial invalid? If so, why? Are the pictures purporting to show Martian vegetation not in fact of vegetation? What better explanation for the appearance of huge trees on Mars is there other than the explanation that they are indeed huge trees? What about the other seemingly artificial items on the planet? More here! See also marsanomalyresearch.com. These are the things you need to be discussing if you're to have a serious role in this discussion, as opposed to the role of an utter nit-wit. Laughing

Gatsby and twg - I'm of the opinion that even in images that are unflattering to the 'face' hypothesis, it still looks artificial. It has a lot of bilateral symmetry whereas in a natural object, one would expect more randomness. I suspect your view differs. Anyway, whether Cydonia is or isn't an artificial construction of a humanoid face by a Martian civilization, there appear to be other artificial objects on the planet. And trees. Who'd of thought it - freakin trees on Mars! Shocked It's an absolute sensation!

I don't know much about the space..... but....

I would be very surprised if there was absolutely no life form - now or before - on any of these planets we have access to.

What makes Earth so special that we are the only living things in the entire universe?!

A lot of things make it special, but when you consider just how many other planets are out there, the chances of that special happening again are quite large. And that's just for carbon based lifeforms like us. Who's to say life can not exist in another form or that it even has to exist on a planet???

The Vedic view is that there is intelligent life on every planet (in every universe) but - according to the particular atmosphere and material composition of each planet - the bodies may be comprised of subtle elements that are beyond our limited range of vision.

According to Vedic cosmology, there are three basic types of planets/planetary systems: higher, middle, and lower.

Mars is an example of a lower planet (as is Saturn ...) Our earth is a middle planet (and Venus and Jupitor are examples of higher, "heavenly" planets ...)

It follows that it would be easier for us to see life forms that exist on Mars (than it would for us to see the more etherial life-forms on higher planets...)

These Vedic cosmologists, how much does one of their telescopes cost?

i think earth is special enough such that we are the only living things in the solar system.

i just watched the video. i'm not convinced. i'll give the guy credit for trying really hard.
i found the 'trees' particularly unconvincing. and i didn't like how he presented his 'facts' either. 'if you saw this on earth, you'd say it's a tree.' no. that's not what i'd say. i'd say it's an unidentifiable roundish blob. after the idea that it's a tree were suggested to me, i'd say 'yeah, i could maybe see that.'
and sure the face thing is creepy. but really, if you look at enough rocks, you're bound to see a face in some of them. we're just wired that way. the man on the moon. the 'old man of the mountain' in new hampshire.
it's already pretty unlikely that if there is any life at all on mars, it's anything more than some microbes. (that's not to say that microbes wouldn't be awesome!) and even if we stretch our imaginations further and say that larger life on mars exists, do you think it would look exactly like us? and if they've got the time to build giant faces in the rocks, where are their cities or other signs of civilization?
as for those other things, the tubes and the triangles and the craters and whatnot... i don't know. but i'm not going to jump to the conclusion that there is human life on mars because i personally can't identify some triangles. it's that sort of thinking that leads to religion.
i'm just going to need more than some old guy's hopes to convince me.

12-15$/gram, depending on how much you buy.
