50 things to avoid doing in Canada: # 1 - 25
This is from a Korean blog on things to avoid doing in Canada that Koreans would usually do out of habit at home. Its interesting to see something written from the other point of view to understand if there are any quirks about us that Koreans find weird. Some are more interesting/insightful than others, of course.
Numbers 26 to 50 will be tomorrow or the next day.
1. Dont talk to Canadians while you eat kimchi.
2. Dont carry your shoes around with you.
3. Dont use the word Indian - use the word Native instead.
4. Dont touch or give kisses to Canadian kids even if you think theyre cute.
5. Dont make women carry heavy objects.
6. Hold the door open if there is a woman walking behind you and let her go first.
7. Say Bless you! when somebody sneezes.
8. Dont glare at people when they blow their nose.
9. Dont keep blowing your horn when the car in front of you is being slow.
10. Dont touch girls asses just because you know them.
11. Dont open your door and get out of the car when stopped by the police.
12. Dont make noises when drinking coffee or eating food.
13. Dont pick up people that wave to you on the street.
14. Dont hold hands with gay friends.
15. Dont call the waiter with a loud voice in the restaurant.
16. Dont beat your children.
17. Dont touch your childrens bums in front of others when you think theyre cute.
18. Dont give more money to children than they need.
19. Dont bribe traffic officers.
20. Dont put rolls of toilet paper on restaurant tables.
21. Dont have kids ride in the front seat.
22. Dont talk back to traffic police when youve been pulled over.
23. Dont order hamburgers at McDonalds in the morning.
24. Women, dont go to swimming pools without shaving.
25. Dont cook dwenjangguk in an apartment. |
Is # 10 a common behavior in Korea? I've never seen it, but the author is Korean, so I guess it might.
P.S. That's a quality blog. Good work, gentlemen (& gentlewomen, if any are involved in the project). |

Now if only Koreans here would live by these rules, it would be so civilized. |

Yes if only they could see how real people live, if they lived like that here I would love it. |

But remember that a list could be just as easily made for Canadians living in Korea. What is polite often depends on the culture of a nation. Still, I accept that some of the things mentioned in the list should, in an ideal world, be universal. |

I just don't get why people think the nose blowing thing isn't done in Korea. Never in my life had I seen people blow their nose at the dinner table until I started going to dinners with my Korean co-workers.
(You can do number 27 in Australia. Can't you buy cold medication over the counter in Canada?) |

It'd be so easy to turn the tables on something like this.
1. Don't smoke your marijuana in public.
2. Don't expect to get laid just cuz you got a number.
3. Don't throw your drink in the bartender's face becuz you don't like their service.
It's just an idiot's guide, I'm sure. You can't take one Korean blog and be like, yep that's what they're all really like. |

39. Dont bang your spoon or fork on the table in the restaurant after youve eaten. |
And why the hell not? How else am I going to justify having caveman eyebrows and werewolf-like arm hairs? |

41. Dont just kick dogs or cats that pass by.
Bahahaha. I saw some old coot trying to attack a pigeon on the sidewalk.
6. Hold the door open if there is a woman walking behind you and let her go first.
That's gotta confuse them.
22. Dont talk back to traffic police when youve been pulled over.
Didn't some old Korean dude get his ass beaten for that? |

Don't go to Canada! The only reason they go to Canada, is to sneak across the border into the United States. |

Yes you can buy cold medicine without a prescription, strange. |

This is my pet peeve - 37. "Dont let your kids run around free in the restaurant." We have seperate tables in a restaurant for privacy so a restauarnt is NOT a public place where people can do anything they want.
I'd also add, "Don't ask Canadian strangers how old they are, if they're married, have kids or how much their salary is." |

So I got my first bit of sickness since being here. Nothing serious, but my nose has been running like a mother f*cker all day and I've been shoving kleenex up it in order to slow the flow, often blowing the bejesus out of it. Even at my hagwon in the middle of class.
My coteacher just informed me that blowing one's nose in Korea is about the height of rudeness and poor manners. Just like scratching your ass while making someone's food is in Canada. Its pretty easy to understand why, too.
Anyway, my point is don't mix difference for inferiority. Sometimes things we do are understandably "rude", and vice versa. Koreans aren't barbaric people. |

I don't practice this myself, and rarely see it happen in Toronto. If there's someone behind me, I'll go first and hold the door open. That seems to be the norm in door-holding etiquette. |

16. Don’t beat your children.
Gotta like that one.
Don't drink in the park. --- that one is a shame. |
