Sexual Crimes on Trains Increase
The number of sexual crimes on trains and at stations has increased, yet crackdowns and precautionary measures are still insufficient, a lawmaker claimed Sunday.
Rep. Chung Hee-soo of the largest opposition Grand National Party suggested that stricter measures should be implemented to crack down on sexual crimes in trains and stations, citing that crimes of this nature have increased by a third.
His argument was based on a report from the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, which showed that there were 40 cases of sexual assault reported last year, up from 30 cases in 2005 and 25 in 2004.
Areas in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province were worst hit with 21 crimes reported, followed by Cheonan and Daejeon with 10 cases each.
Night is the most feared time for victims of sexual harassment and station security units are short-staffed. The minimum on duty should be 422, but only 383 are actually operating.
``It is an urgent issue to at least fill the minimum quota of security guards as a precautionary measure, Chung said. ``When it comes to sexual crimes, prevention is much more important than punishment.
Current laws impose a maximum one-year prison term or a fine of 3 million won on a person who commits a sexual crime in public. |

I wonder how that compares to other major metropolitan areas. Also, I wonder how the coverage (km of train) are now compared to in 2004 and 2005 and 2006. |

The CRIMES are on the increase or the REPORTING of them is on the increase? I suspect the latter.

In all my time in Japan, I've only seen it once and man, did the guy ever get it. I assume the woman used the dreaded hatpin defense. He screamed a storm, blood welling up on his arm, and him leaving the train at the next stop.
(Okay I didn't SEE him do anything, but the aftermath was entertaining. Good for her!) |

I'm surprised they aren't blaming the increase on foreigners.
Korean media is so uptight about foreigners hooking up with Koreans, but many of my Korean friends admit Westerners treat women better as a whole (less hitting, treating them as equals, etc.). I think we are doing the Korean women a favor and showing them something called respect, women's rights and balanced relationships. |

Usual stupid reaction from Korean lawmakers.

No Moron, you just need to get the police to actually enforce them! |

The media and Korean police are great at making up numbers. IE: The majority of foreigners teach English by day and do drugs at night. |

Just how exactly does one perform a sexual assault on a train? I saw a guy caressing a subway window once but the train didn't seem to mind. |

Shouldn't that say "no hitting?" Are your Korean friends being smacked around by foreign guys? If so, why haven't you stomped on their waegook throats? Not like the K-Police would stop you. |

I was molested on a train once.
The #7 heading north. At around 10:30. It was packed like Tokyo subway. The young lady in front of me kept grinding and grinding her bottom into my crotch and no matter how many times I went back, she was never there.
The aftermath was horrible. |

yeah, that happened to me 2x in China. but i didnt think of it as a bad thing... the second time, the girl made eye contact with me, smiled, positioned herself in front of a huge crowd getting on the subway, backed into me.... and then 2 stops later, after incessant grinding, she just got off the subway and walked away without saying a word |
