I was wondering if anyone out has had any experience with learning khmer while here in Korea. Going on my dedication to my korean studies, im pretty sure im not going to be picking it up just by buying a book and studying alone. I was hoping to be able to get a teacher but im just not too sure how to go about it. Im in Daegu. Any help would be much appreciated! |

In Korea? Why not do it in Cambodia?? btw Cambodians generally speak better English than Koreans considering tourism is their biggest industry

I was in Cambodia two weeks ago and put a bit of effort into learning it. The pronunciation is really difficult. I tried writing things down, but since the Romanization can't really capture the proper pronunciation, progress was slow.
Like was mentioned, if you were living there, you'd have no trouble finding cheap tutors. |

The reason is that I have to spend at least the next 12 months here, then I am going there. There is no doubt it would cost practically nothing for me to do it over there, but its just not an option for me at the moment. Just trying to get a head start thats all........ |

I bought a Khmer phrase book that you can have. I doubt I'll ever look at it again. PM me if you're interested. |

Taking into account the countries that Cambodia is surrounded by, the Khmer language is unique in that region in that it is a non-tonal language.
Sorry, I've been meaning to say that all day and just needed to get it off of my chest. Please do go on. |

i read 'off the rails in phnom penh' and that sounds like a bit much n i doubt there has been any inflation there, when i was there in the summer i didn;t engage in those sorts of activiies - SE asians are easy enough to get what u want without paying. You can still eat out for 25 cents, hire a tuk tuk for $6 -$10 for the day etc shit they even give u free accommodation in sihanoukville |

Long time would be 20 bucks there I think. We are talking about a stay over, right? |

had some good times in cambodia, just got me thinking about those 10 lobsters you could buy for $1....it does have its downside the country is a rubbish dump, full of beggars and don't expect to travel anywhere fast.
BTW if anyone is going to phnom penh please visit the lighthouse orphanage and bring along some money or food, the children there are wonderful. My firend set up a charity to help them out, so if anyone is interested in helping out head over to http://www.cambaid.org.uk also if you goto siem reap check the free concert given on saturday nights by a doctor who works for the childrens hospital and give your support. GREAT BOOK.
Seemed fairly obsolete by the time I got to PP in 2001, but great book nontheless.
It was a driving force for making me want to go there. |

Me too. And yeah, it is now a little obsolete. However, "guns" - check, "girls" - check, "ganja" - check. It's still a helluva place. |
