Two months ago koreans in the philippines complained to their embassy that immigration was harassing them by checking their visa status since so many were illegaly overstaying. Korean officials responded by not issuing overseas work visas.

As teachers, we are being harassed by being asked for our teaching credentials based on a tv report. My hagwon recently submitted my transcripts which was fine. But now the Dept orf Ed. want my passport and ARC card! Now that has gone too far and I for one will call the US embassy and complain about it. I enourage every teacher here to do the same.

Some dude ~ a total stranger ~ asked me if I had teaching credentials while I was waiting for my car to be repaired in the garage yesterday. This was inside the garage, mind!

I am 100% legal, but it's uncomfortable all the same.

Ha, that's funny. Yes, you can email or call the American embassy, but they'll just point you to the F.A.Q. about "Living in Korea" and laugh when they hang up the phone or hit the send button.

Don't expect them to actually do anything to help you.

Notice the OP didn't say anything about their response to him/her.

Here's the number, why don't one of you guys call them and post their response?

02/397-4000

I'm really interested in hearing their response. And I'm really not trying to be that sarcastic here ya'll...haha, maybe a little. Razz

I got accosted in Incheon by the Immigration enforcers about 2 years ago. The youngest one demanded to see my passport or alien registration card. I asked him, "Who are you?" He responded with, "Police!" I told him I wanted to see his credentials first before I showed him anything. The oldest copper there laughed, gave a thumbs up, and then told the young cop to show me his identifcation. Young copper did, so I obliged. Then everyone was happy.

What makes me wonder is how this society, especially its government, can think that any of these ridiculous stunts--and stunts is what they are--can contribute to a positive image. Aren't they trying to get tourists to come here? What if I were a tourist? Getting shaken down by the authorities doesn't strike me as quite the fun vacation.

By the way, the US Embassy is not legal aid. I don't understand why so many Americans (a) don't understand that and (b) get bent out of shape when the Embassy explains that simple fact to them.

I don't see an admission of answering the rude sod in the garage.

Thanks for noticing. It's interesting that the previous two respondents presumed that I did nothing.
