I'm just wondering about the appeal of two "comedians" from your native land. They would be Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel, who also happen to be dating. Silverman hosted the MTV awards, and Kimmel has the late night show.
Do any of you find them funny, and why?
My take: Silverman just cuts people down, which is rarely funny, and especially from her.
Kimmel: I was convinced his atrocity of a late night show would fold in the first 2 weeks, but it's still on years later. This guy is like Leno (who is weak), only without the jokes, delivery, polish, or likeability. Seriously, is this a direct result of the 500 channel universe, where anyone can be a "star"?
(Current Events Forum because Silverman hosted the Awards, and made a crack at Britney, which was, of course, unoriginal and not funny). |

Neither is very funny or original and, yes, the cable TV explosion has lowered the bar.
Leno deserves far better than to be compared to those two. I caught his act years before he began hosting The Tonight Show and he was hilarious and even a bit raunchy.
Considering he goes on five nights a week and writes most of his own material, it's amazing. He's also a decent, genuine guy.
Reminds me in some ways of John Candy, who I miss greatly. |

Silverman isn't funny. Maybe she gets a pass because she is a female Jewish comedian (or so they claim) who's shtick is acting like a complete and utter bitch? *shrugs*
Jimmy Kimmel was funny on the Man Show. But it was an obvious low brow kind of humor that was funny in that context. I've only seen his talk show a few times and was fairly indifferent to it. But I'm not a huge fan of talk shows nowadays anyway, most of them suck in my opinion....

Leno has gotten better over time, he doesn't suck up to his guests as much, which bugs me about Kimmel whenever I see a clip of him. He has no charisma, zero.
Letterman kills Leno in my book, but I can see Leno's appeal.
Candy made some great comedies. Man, the 80s where definitely the era of funny movies. Uncle Buck was a good one. |

Nah, for John Candy movies I always preferred um, what was the name of it. The Great Outdoors? Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was great too. |

Silverman is funny. I like it when she insults people. Her words at Paris before she went to jail were awesome. |

I agree. It's funny to hear people get ruined in good fun. She does really well on roasts and such. She has a knack for cutting people to the bone. |

Have you seen the Howard Stern roasts? Lisa Lampanelli is one of the funniest people on earth. |

Indeed. Roasts are great. Everyone's being insulted and everyone's laughing about it. |

Actually have to agree w/Alyallen: Kimmel was good when he co-hosted The Man Show...but that show didn't take itself too seriously. |

I can't really say I like any comedians on TV. Not that they can't be funny, but the TV medium is so restrictive that it's a lot of "Straights drive like this, gays like this" and "How 'bout girls' swimsuits? Might as well be dental floss *struts around the stage*". It's banal, to say the least. A lot of comedians from TV, once you get them off TV, can be really funny, but you'd never know. Besides, Adam Corolla carried the Mans Show and it still sucked.
Alas, Sarah Silverman isn't on TV. But she does the same thing that mentioned above, just intensified by about 100 times. Sure, shocking can be funny but there should be a point as well as a punchline. Comedy that magnifies parts of our lives that we typically don't think about, that's the kind of comedy I like. Ok, so Sarah Silverman brings some attention to the fact that she's a Jewish woman she can get away with anything, but it's a one trick pony joke. In my opinion she's a lot like Margaret Cho, shocking but nothing of substance (although Sarah's bit in The Aristocrats was good). |

I guess that's what bugs me about Silverman, she piles on to such obvious stuff. Paris Hilton is going to jail, Brit Spears is washed up, hahahaha. Seems like the ugly/fat girl syndrome who wants to be the popular girl.
I did like the man show, but I don't get him as a Late show host. |

But at the same time what late night hosts are funny? Leno and Letterman I can stomach for their monologue. Conan is decent if I don't have anything else to do but I'd never go out of my way to watch him. Humor on TV is so watered down that there's not much to watch of any kind of show. And this gets passed off as American culture even though it's so boring (I guess it is mainstream and popular but I could argue it's not what's chosen that's popular, but what's given). |
