Our admin is soooooo inept that I'm now #3 in seniority at our school. To put that in perspective, on Feb. 1 I was #11. Does that tell you anything about this place?

Even more entertaining, from my perspective: Several weeks ago the school refused to extend a teacher's contract (probably because the teacher is not a native speaker--which is ironic since they hired two K-teachers. 6 people came for the interview. They chose one and offered her the job. Today they had her come in to sign the contract. She was reading it and said, "What's this W2 million deposit on an unfurnished apartment? No one said anything about that in the interview." The school said a deposit is standard...in America. She replied that she was in Korea and a deposit isn't standard here. They tried to give her the runaround until she told them to put the contract where the sun don't shine and walked out. Now the school is short a teacher AGAIN.

On the same day: A few weeks ago, one new teacher agreed to buy the furniture of the teacher leaving (1st Floor apt), so another new teacher agreed to buy the furniture of the latest teacher leaving (2nd Floor apt). The school had promised to move the newest arrival into the first floor apt, but then the teacher who decided to buy that furniture decided he hated working here and is planning on leaving as soon as something else shows up...and cancelled the plan to buy that 1st Floor furniture. Today, the other teacher asked if he could just move into the 2nd Floor apt since he was going to buy that furniture. The school said, No. You must move into the 1st Floor apt. The teacher moving out of the 2nd Floor apt must remove all the furniture and it must be moved down stairs to the 1st Floor apt...after that teacher finally moves out. Why? Because you agreed to move into that 1st Floor apt. Shocked "But both apts will be empty on Sept 30." "We don't care. You agreed to move into the 1st Floor apt." End of discussion.

If that seems convoluted to you, it is because it is.

Yes, that is a possibility:

This is the place where a teacher was fired for having surgery during vacation (It doesn't look good to have a teacher on crutches)...then re-hired the same teacher when no one applied to fill the position. (He was desperate.)

This is the same waygookin who then got into a fight and knocked down a Canadian with his crutch. (He also had another scuffle with another foreigner this weekend outside the apt building. No details known, but the foreigner was holding his elbow like it had been hurt.

This is the place where the admin 'generously' cancelled the once a month Friday evening class...and the next day 'reasonably' asked us to work an additional TWO nights during the week to make up for the one 'missed hour'. (I refused and so far, I'm the only one not working extra nights--and seem to be being paid for working the same number of hours. Shhhhhhh. Don't tell anyone. Very Happy )

This is the place where a teacher raped a foreign teacher while HE was passed out on her floor...and when that relationship didn't blossom, had a series of affairs with the students (amazing how often she could call in on a Monday and say 'female problems' were preventing her from working.)

Have you noticed you will tolerate things and conditions in Korea you wouldn't tolerate for a second back at home. A couple weekends ago we went on this very badly planned "MT". The whole batch of male/female teachers were given one huge room to sleep in. No pillows. No blankets. Not even a bathroom or shower. And mogis a poppin'. I think the plan was we'd all drink soju until we just collapsed in place. I'm no f'in' dummy and know this school can't plan an orgy in a cat house so I had the foresight to bring my own pillow and bath towel.

Anyway, back at home, I'd have grabbed the first taxi out of there and checked into a five star hotel.

But here, it's kind of like "this is misery but a new kind of misery. I need to stick around just to see how further it can degenerate in some exotic Korean way."

That is exactly how I feel. I'm doing my best to keep an emotional distance and keep my ability to laugh at the absurdities. There are moments when it doesn't work and I kind of panic, but so far I've been able to not let the insanity get to me too much. As long as I can maintain that frame of mind, this job is kind of enjoyable in a twisted, masochistic way.

Someone PMed me, asking for the name of the place so a friend could send in an application, but I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to anyone, but most especially not to a newbie.

PS to the guy who said waking up to find out you had been used as an unconscious boytoy, would it make any difference to you what 'she' looked like?
