S.Korean tycoon gets suspended sentence for beatings

One of South Korea's richest businessmen was handed a suspended 1- year sentence on Tuesday for beating up karaoke bar workers, the latest tycoon in the country to avoid jail despite a criminal conviction.

Hanwha Group chairman Kim Seung-youn had appealed his 18-month jail term in July after a district court found him guilty of abducting the bar workers, punching them and hitting them with a steel pipe.

Kim has contended he went to the bar to find those responsible for earlier beating his son.

"Events led to this incident because he was overcome with emotion as a father over his son's injuries," Yonhap News Agency quoted an appeals judge as saying.

The court suspended Kim's sentence for three years and ordered him to do 200 hours of community service.

He has been in hospital since mid-August because of health problems, including depression and insomnia.

Last week, another business tycoon, Hyundai Motor Group chairman Chung Mong-koo, had his jail sentence for fraud suspended, leaving him free to run the world's sixth largest auto maker.

His sentence was suspended by the judge on the grounds putting him behind bars could hurt Asia's fourth largest economy.

When are they going to learn that rewarding violent criminal behaviour is, in the long term, far more damaging to the economy than putting some tycoon in jail?

Oh, well. It's their country, not mine. If they want gangsters to run their country, who am I to do anything?

In a civilized country, when a crime is committed against you or yours, you call the police and/or a lawyer. You don't hire criminals to commit yet another crime. The civilized response to a beating is another beating in return? Two wrongs make a right? Why not throw out the entire judicial system?

Young black kid with a dime bag of pot vs John DeLorean with shoulder bag of coke. Rich people are not like men of lesser means. Justice systems all over the world recognize this. Why should things be different here?
