I was at university in Manchester, age nearly 23. I was doing some stuff on a computer and heard about it on the net, although didn't realize the full, Armageddon-style extent until I got home and watched the 6 o'clock news (which, British Summer Time, was only 4 hours after the fact).

University closed for the day early, which created the false impression that we also faced security emergencies. I'll never forget the 30 minute train journey home - packed with people like a busy Seoul subway, total silence, everyone contemplating the impending annihilation of humanity. Mother was crying when I got home, saying "poor New York".

Went to my local pub with a pal I'm no longer in touch with that evening.

I am not sure if a post like this has been started in previous years, but where were you and what were you doing on the morning of September 11, 2001?

I was woken up by my buddy who called and said "We are being bombed, turn on the tv!" I had fallen asleep the night before on the couch in my studio apartment, five minutes away from the Fresno State campus when this phone call took place on the morning of September 11, 2001. I turned on the tv, half awake and saw all kinds of craziness on the television. I had no idea what the World Trade Center was so I was a little puzzled at first.

Then the reality of what was going on hit me as I watched in horror as estimated death tolls were shown and that it was most likely an act of terrorism. I remember going to McDonalds and ordering a sausage breakfast burrito and listening to the radio as people called in with all kinds of crazy talk about WW III starting. I raced back home and was glued to my television for the rest of the day. Classes at Fresno State were canceled for the week. What a crazy time that was.

I was in a sauna house in Taipei accross from Sun Yet Sun Memorial Park. (there is a subway stop there now) The TV was on and the twin towers were burning. Since the report was in Chinese , I had no idea what was going on. I thought for quiet some time that it was a movie, since I did not understand what they were saying. In fact , it was not until the next day that I realized what really happend.

The Republic of China flag was displayed at half mast for several days after the tragedy. And many Taiwanese , after hearing that I was from the states, offered their condolences to me.

2 years after 9/11, Bush came to thank Halifax for opening their homes up to the American people during this tragedy. Better late than never I suppose. But I'm sure he met with people and had other business to take care of as well. Halifax isn't that big, and for him to come here just for that, seemed odd. Perhaps someone knows why he was there?

I remember he was interested in something else too, but I forget what it was. 'Tis very long ago.

In any case, I was one of the 5000 people out there waving with less that five fingers (less than two to be specific) Very Happy

I was on Koh Samui with my wife. Wouldn't have found out but we happened to go to an Internet cafe that day to send emails out and it was on the TV there in the cafe. It felt strange in that it seemed so distant. I hadn't lived in the States for some time and had never been to NY. It was still upsetting, but I kind of felt like I should have been more upset than I was.

I was on my way to school on the LIRR. When I got out in Suffolk Co., there were a bunch of voicemails but I didn't know what about until I got in and saw the television.
