Overview:

My friend is a pilot with Continental Airlines and he got me a "buddy pass" from LA to Hawaii to Guam to Fukuoka for an incredible price. Now it is time to pay him for that ticket. Normally I would just send him a payment from my bank account via the internet Bill Pay service, but Guam (his home) is not an option with Washington Mutual. So I decided to send him a paper check via airmail, which he could simply deposit into his account.



But when I get to the Post Office and asked for an airmail envelope, the lady behind the counter tells me I can't send a check and I would have to go to the bank.

"But it is an American bank check and it is going to America" I replied...

"I'M the postmaster! and you can't send this. Go to the bank."

I asked her to explain this law or even show it to me. Nothing. She asked to see the check, which was clearly marked Washington Mutual, my Cali address, etc. The envelope I was filling out had a Guam (USA) address on it.

Still nothing.

She was quite perplexed when I wanted to buy the envelope anyway. (I had already written on it.)

So, my question to you folks is... Is there such a law? Or was this just an uninformed postal master, perhaps with a chip on her shoulder? (She certainly copped a big attitude.)

(No need to offer other means of mailing it, I already went to another post office and mailed it no problem)

Whoa. Take the check, wrap it up inside of five sheets of white paper and then put some tape on the edge. Now the Nazi can't see what's inside, right? Problem solved. Go to another post office and send it from there if you have to.

It typifies the Korean Postal Service. I send gear back to Oz frequently and depending on which Post Office I send it from will determine whether it is drama free or a pain in the butt. I know the good ones now.

There is a law in the US about this now. My mother just sent me a package and there's a long list of stuff you can't send including paper checks, currency, and traveler's cheques.

It's illegal to mail checks in payment of debt? Is this what she's claiming?

yep..it's true...there is a law now you can't send anthrax, feces, letter bombs or checks in the mail
