I heard alot of people say that a systems power supply is key (the heart of a system)....but why?? Isn't power, power??

I have a cheap old system that I use as a media server type thing. I bought it used (would imagine it was a PC bang system before). I have added 3 more big hard drives to it.

Is there any reason to upgrade the power supply....not sure at the moment what it is, writing from school. If there are enough power cables, isn't that enough to worry about?? Probably not, but I don't know....

What you think Spliff??

What is the Wattage Rating on your present Power supply?

Harddrive use a lot of power.

Does everything sound like it's spinning up alright?

Yes, but I was having some issues with a year old hard drive.....bad sectors and the like. Sometime the drive wouldn't boot. Thought it was just bad drive, but now this has me thinking.....Could it be the power supply??

I'll check when i get home.....

Is it noisy? If it isn't bothering you in some way just let it go till it dies. Then upgrade it. Anyhow, hardly a big worry you can pick up a cheap 400 watt PSU at Yongson for 20,000. Very Happy Like you said, you're just using the rig to surf the net, listen to music and watch movies.

It's a 300 Watt PSU. It a 'GP' switched PSU.

So, with 4 hard drives, 2 ethernet cards, 500MB Ram, Intel Pentium 4 - 1.6 GHz, GeForce4 MX440 AGP x8 Graphics Card......is 300W enough?

I don't "use" this computer at all....it sits in the closet and just runs. It just acts as a server - media storage for XBMC, downloads bittorrents, and runs a few servers to access mp3's and stuff over the net. I use a laptop for everything else.

Is this enough power??? Everything is running, but maybe the hard drives aren't getting enough power and that is causing the errors??

Cheers.
