Islam has an interesting tenet on this subject. You're not converting-- you're reverting to your natural state. Anyway, "About.com" has a helpful page on the subject. I highlighted my favourite part in blue.

How to Convert to Islam
From your Islam Guide
If you believe in the teachings of Islam, it is recommended to make a formal declaration of faith. After careful study and prayer, if you find that you want to embrace the faith, here's how.
Difficulty Level: Average Time Required: Variable
Here's How:
1. For a Muslim, every action begins with your intention. Quietly, to yourself, make the intention to embrace Islam as your faith.
2. Say the following words with clarity of intention, firm faith and belief:
3. Say: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill Allah." (I bear witness that there is no diety but Allah.)
4. Say: "Wa ash-hadu ana Muhammad ar-rasullallah." (And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.)
5. Take a shower, symbolically cleansing yourself of your past life.
6. Learn how to pray and practice Islam in your daily life.
7. Continue to learn, study, and grow in your new faith.
Tips:
1. Before embracing Islam, be sure to spend time studying the faith, reading books, and learning from other Muslims.
2. Your conversion should be based on knowledge, certainty, acceptance, submission, truthfulness, and sincerity.
3. It is not required to have Muslim witnesses to your conversion, but many prefer to have such support.
4. If you wish to go for Hajj (pilgrimage), a "certificate of Islam" may be required. Contact your local Islamic center to obtain one.

Bah, just grab a certificate of Islam off the internet and carry it in your pocket. |

Meh, it took me 20 minutes at the mosque in Jakarta and a question from the imam relating the cheese-catcher on the end of my noodle, which mercifully had been removed at an earlier date. Note, Indonesian law requires a couple to be of the same religion if they wish to marry. I plan to celebrate the start of ramadan by getting hideously pissed. |

The whole story seems fishy to me.
I mean the reason why they were released. A payoff? If so, how could the Americans support such a move. And if so, they're just going to do it again.
My gut feeling was that the Taliban made some sort of a deal with S.Korea, providing info on the North or some other crap.
It's just too strange. |

This will absolutely not be possible. Once a Muslim, always a Muslim. Apostatizing from the Muslim faith carries the severe penalty of death. |

Really? Even in Korea? Do they have GPS space-missile technology?
Didn't think so. Just tell them what they want to hear, then revert to normality upon your return. |

Good point. I'm a really good actor, though, and I would pull it off. That being the case, I don't recommend this tactic/strategy for the general population. |

It was reported by some and denied by others. It sounds like it could just be propaganda to make the terrorists sound more evil. From what I hear they treated the hostages pretty well. |

I have yet to see that from any sources. All I've seen are some really (probably unintentionally) funny quotes (maybe due to bad translation). My fave was the "slave" labor of having to carry water from a well and leveling ground for motorcycles. Oh the humanity! Sounds like the landscaping jobs high school guys take during the summer back home. |

It says in that article I posted that they beat them. Regarding the sexual assault, in yesterday's International Herald Tribune, in says, "Je declined to confirm reports that some of the female hostages had been sexually assaulted." http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/09/12/asia/AS-GEN-SKorea-Afghan-Hostages.php |

For such a big incident as being released from a kidnapping, the media may very well put you under a microscope for some time. All it takes is a fatwa from an important-enough cleric or sheikh. Seems to be working quite well for our UK-based friend Salman Rushdie, having no need to look over his shoulder ever, eh? |
