LMAO
As a former rugby player, I think American football is a *beep* sport HOWEVER...they do put in 110% into what they do and on occasion damn near kill themselves doing it, so I'm not going to proclaim it a non sport...

It's a lot of padding for guys who weigh 3 tonnes and spend all week in the gym.
Maybe the majority of them are really thin underneath, i heard it was invented by an anorexic person who didn't like to be embarrassed at PE. |

Yeah but if you've got 5 or 6 guys who weigh 250-320lbs each, and every one of them is trying to take your head off, there's no such thing as "too much padding." |

If you watched the sport you would see that a lot of the Pros are wearing less and less padding.
Maybe the majority of them are really thin underneath,
If you watched the sport you would see that these guys, barring the O and D-Lines are some of the most fit athletes in the world. Even still, the big fat lineman are way faster than your average Joe.

Alrighty then...

Why bother? Dome Vans sees the word "American," and he systematically has to put it down. |

There are 330-pound linemen who run the 40 twice as fast as I do.
I'd be interested to see what a "realer" sport is, and what sport has athletes who are closer to the complete package of size, strength, speed, agility, and stamina. |

Anyone who has actually played the game in full padding as I did in high school knows how hard the hits are regardless of protective gear.
And yes, Canadian and American football is full of guys who spend half their time in the gym doing squats and bench presses to increase the impact of their tackles (by the way often two guys tackle simultaneously, which in high school equals about 400 lbs of flying weight, and that extra POW when the tacklers every muscle is geared to provide an extra whack).
Having played soccer/world football for nine years I can say it doesn't compare to the brute physicality of the other game.
I have absolutely no personal experience with rugby but I suspect that Canadian/American football and rugby are way more entitled to the title of sport than soccer/world football.
Challenge cricket and billiards as sports. If anything.
All are sports of sorts. Let none of us turn into the sort of jerk who tries to undermine another sport by saying it isn't a 'real' sport. |

oh... i suppose i can see where you're coming from with that. but the things that i listed alongside of 'and american football is a real sport' included other indesputable comments such as 'and jessica alba is a woman' and 'and jinju is a tool', to which the op didn't have anything to say about.
that whole list was just a jab at jinju. if you take a look at his posting history, you'll see what i'm talking about.
jizzo! what's this all about?! |

not really a sport...more like legalized brutality and mayhem...you only have to look at all the U.S. players who are in (or going) to jail or in trouble with the law to get the picture...I guess it helps keep the prison population down...if it weren't for the old gridiron game probably 90% of the players in the NFL would be doing some serious time.... |

I never used to think that it was but I then took my British blinkers off and saw the players as men with a lot of athletic skill. There is more athleticism involved in American football than there is in cricket.
I don't find it very exciting to watch as it is a bunch of set plays but if I was brought up with it then it might be different.
The other thing is that it is not a world sport. Hardly anyone plays gridiron
outside the states. |

Do you even know how the game is played or do you just assume it's a bunch of meatheads with nothing better to do than try to kill each other? Yes, "brutality" is part of it, but there is SO much more.

Maybe I misconstrued your intentions. I get pretty defensive over this issue. |
