Sometimes, sport is mindless and exciting with pure strength and bursts of speed. What...you mean the 100 meter dash isn't sport?

Look, you love soccer or rugby. Fine. That doesn't mean that American Football isn't a sport. Live and let live, pal.

Whenever I think of Soccer, I think "This game can be played with armless midgets."

So could American football, but it might require some velcro.

Dumbest thread ever. To ask if its a real sport implies that its a sport in the first place, something that anyone with 3 digits in their IQ would know is not true.

I have played rugby for twenty years and have always respected American football. I've watched big linebackers and thought, "Man that guy would be good in the front row".

I've watch running backs make 100m breaks and though "man, that guy would be an awesome winger".

I've watched play-making genius like Favre and Manning and thought, "That guy would be a brilliant first five"

It's just a shame how little ball those in the AFL guys get or how little defence the defense actually see. What I have found though, both from playing in New Zealand and in Korea is guys converting from AFL to rugby have always said, "Hell, I love this game, there's so much more action and love the freedom and continuous play rugby offers."

At the end of the day both are great but highly different true sports. I just know what I like and it takes 80 minutes.

Haha, that shows your true class, pal. I would say that it was a shame you have never experienced the thrill of such a exciting and physical sport, but then again, you don't seem like the type of guy into anything other than whining and attending the needs of your blow-up doll.

Why is it that those who dislike American policy the most also tend to like Americana the most? Could it be dogma?

Football is an incredible sport. The men are exceptional athletes. If you didn't grow up watching it, they you might not like it.

Though, is soccer a real sport? Any game that a pretty-boy Italian can play for 2 hours and not mess up his hair sure doesn't count as a sport in my books. But then again, I'm Canadian. Hockey is the ultimate man-sport.

This is truly a crap discussion with crap reasoning for it not being a sport. I particularly like the one about the guys wearing pads...

Let me, for those of you who don't know him, introduce you to Mario Williams of my alma mater, North Carolina State University.

Quote:
While playing in the ACC under coach Chuck Amato, Williams played the defensive end position. He was a "blue chip" recruit coming out of Richlands High School, and he did not disappoint, starting at DE all three seasons. He recorded 175 tackles and 25.5 sacks in his 36 game career.

At the NFL Combine, he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.66 seconds with a 40.5 inch vertical leap, 10-foot broad jump and did 35 repetitions in the 225-pound bench press. During the 2005 season, he started 12 games, recording 62 total tackles with 24 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, 15 hurries, a safety and a blocked kick.

Now, at a mere 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m), 285 lb (129 kg), he's obviously not the biggest guy in the league. But, he has one job and one job alone, to put whoever might have the football at the time on the ground as quickly and surely as possible.

No, I know that you're going to say, "But Plig! There are guys in League and Union that do that, too! I assure you that I am aware of that. However, how big are those guys? Can they run the 40 in 4.66? Can they jump 10 feet?

Now, imagine putting a guy like Mario, or Julius Peppers, or Ray Lewis playing rugby, and imagine him hitting you at full force. How many guys are going to be seriously injured from that? How many guys are going to be dead from that?

These guys wear pads, and they still get hurt. They wear pads not because they aren't tough. They wear pads because they are the toughest SOB's in sports.

The wearing pads thing is like the most simple-minded stab that people can make at AFL players, kinda like the people who label kiwis sheep-shaggers; it's a cliche, unoriginal and doesn't require much thought, thus making it accessable to the masses.

Check out this funny as hell 'Terry Tait - Office Discipline Video'. The hit on the secretary at 2.05 is an absolute bone-rattler.

Tell me what happens to guys who Terry hits who aren't wearing pads...

I'm a big fan of Mario, nice to see him break out a little in his first game this season after showing some nice flashes last year. I def think hou made the right pick in taking him over bush.
