Isn't that video card only a 256mb card? Also I'd probably want 4gigs of ram considering the price.

139$ for WinXP? *cough*.... I'd rather invest that cost into more ram +video card speed Wink

it's 512 for the graphics card and trust me when I say you want an original OS. The last thing you need is corrupted files from acopy. The OS is the single most important piece of software you can have. Don't scrimp in this category.

Good advice.

Those are very reasonable prices for ordering the pieces, putting together the system, and delivering the computer. You and I will need to talk more later Cubanlord Wink

So what do the rest of you think of that system he has highlighted? I don't know much about the processor and motherboard, are they quite high end these days? As for the video card, I'll look up the stats on that later, headed to work now.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone!

Unless you are using a 64bit OS, skip the extra RAM.

32 bit windows CANNOT address 4 gigs... so it is ignored and some hardware thet may try to write to it may cause windows to dump.

Dude, you realize you'll have to invite a gang load of people to your place to help/watch you build the beast right? You had better set aside money for the snacks and drinks. hehe

I'm building my next machine in either February, March, or maybe April. Depends on a trip my wife and I are planning for 3 weeks next March. My wife just upped my budget to 2.5million which will include dual 17-19" LCDs. I'm planning to invite a couple people including Demo and CubanLord over to help me with the build.

One thing CL forgot on there was a DVD burner which can be picked up for about $35 or less. I prefer Lite-on, but some people don't like them. I've read good things about Phillips, but I think they're more expensive.

I mention the Raptor (150GB for about $200 or so even on Danawa) again because I think the faster drive would be good for loading the OS and quick games. Use the 500 for data backup or storage.

yeah, I didn't include the dvd writer because you can pick that puppy up anywhere and everywher ein this country for virtually pennies.

Here's an idea: Get the raptpr and place only software (OS, games, office) on the raptor and use the other harddrive for everything else.

I'm seriously re-considering buying another Nvidia graphics card. There seems to be a widespread driver problem with Nvidia drivers and Vista. It's been ongoing for about 9 months now. Nvidia and Microsoft can't seem to fix it.

The error message is "NVLLDMKM driver has stopped working and has recovered". What happens is, usually when playing 3D games, the screen will go black for a few seconds, the game stutters for another few seconds then it comes back. Sometimes you can play on. Other times you get BSOD. This typically happens, when it happens, about every 10 seconds so the game is basically unplayable.

Check it out on the Nvidia forums......113 pages of users getting the same problem!!!
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=25381

That's just the techy people writing in there. There must be at least thousands of people out there with the same problem.

ATI doesn't have this problem with Vista.

I cancelled the order of my 8XXX series card. I want to wait see how this pans out. Nvidia have until Christmas to sort it out or I'm buying ATI.

Corrupted pirated OS's are rare and easy to spot. They don't work. If you're downloading then read the comments from other members and make a judgement if you're going to get a working copy or not. In 10 years of using Windows I've never had a problem with OS's which could be put down to it being pirated.

A good image/ISO/copy of an operating system will work exactly as well as an original. The only difficulty arises if you want upgrade updates and your version doesn't pass WGA (windows genuine authentication). But there are ways around that too.

At the moment, I'm very relieved I didn't pay a few hundred dollars for Vista Ultimate. If I did, I would be asking for my money back.

I think Spliff is referring to the 16MB part. Apparently he doesn't realize that hard drives have cache.
