Unless you are using a 64bit OS, skip the extra RAM.
32 bit windows CANNOT address 4 gigs... so it is ignored and some hardware thet may try to write to it may cause windows to dump. |
So 4gigs of ram would actually cause me problems on windowsXP? I thought I recalled there being a 64bit WinXP version, am I right?
Sooo.... 4gigs + WinXP 64bit Edition = Good times for Tathen? |

I thought a 32-bit OS could access upto 4GB, by my (it's been a while) maths..
2 ^ 32 = 4294967296
(1024 ^ 3) * 4 = 4294967296 (the number of bytes in 4GB)
.. so anything over 4GB would be unusable? |

@ cuban: if you wanna spec a rig from a north american retailer that likely doesn't ship to Korea, this is a kicka$$ rig, including a killer mobo (P35 chipset, proven overclocking board), q6600 w. the top-of-the-line air cooler and 86cfm fan to mount on it, overkill psu to make sure that everything has enough juice, 8800gts 320mb (you don't need the 640mb unless you are pushing screen res > 1440x900), and a fantastic case loaded with fans. Should have no probs pushing 3.4 - 3.6 Ghz with this rig...

If you are interested in overclocking, having all 4 dimms populated can hold you back, as it is extra work and heat on the northbridge... |

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is based upon Windows Server 2003 SP1 (build 5.2.3790.1830), as that was the latest version of Microsoft Windows during the operating system's development, but takes Windows XP as its name. It is designed to use the expanded 64-bit memory address space provided by the x86-64 architecture.

So yes and no...
Windows XP 32-bit is limited to a total of 4 GB, which is, by default, equally divided between Kernel and application usage. Using the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file forces Windows to limit the kernel to the upper 1GB and provides up to 3GB for applications. |

Ok... So what would you guys advise me to do? I figured I might as well go with 4gigs of ram even if I go with WinXP (assuming it won't cause problems...) on the assumption that I may in fact upgrade to Windows Vista in the future after compatibility issues settle down.
Sound like a reasonable plan?
Anyone have some practical knowledge of Quad-core processors? I've done my reading on them a bit tonight. Back in the day, I only had to read the processors speed itself to determine the overall value of it, but it's all changed since dual-core / quad-core.
Are there any downsides to going with the quad-core? Any compatibility issues I will face, such as a lower performance on programs that don't utilize multi-core functions? I could be way off base here, and my plans are mostly aimed at newer games, so need I worry about anything related to this?
I'm on the assumption that a multi-core cpu is superior to single-core processors of higher ghz in every way right?
Oh my god, I just remembered an important question/detail I overlooked!!!!
What about a PhysX chip????? Details on this would be appreciated

That's very nice. Do they ship to Korea? I know, from experience, that Tiger Direct does. |

| Yes, and they have GOOD American memory(Corsair, Kingston, Patriot, etc...) that due to the protectionist market isn't available here. |

If you are gonna run XP do not waste your money on 4 gigs of RAM... like ttompatz said, XP will only recognize 3gigs at most, and RAM runs best in pairs (dual channel mode). If/ when you upgrade to Vista, buy another 2gigs of RAM then, if you want.
DOn't waste your money on a PhysX card either... in theory, it is interesting but the practical application is not very well developed yet. In fact, when the PhysX card first came out (same time as Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter) there were many benchmarks that showed decreased performance with the PhysX card enabled. Not alot of titles support it anyways :S
If the budget allows, definitely go with the quad processor. More and more games and apps are supporting multithreading. Having a quad will in no way decrease performance for any app that is not multithreaded.
Dunno if ncix ships to Korea, but it may be worth looking into. |
