We use the word too much.

In my thoughts, a friend is someone who actually cares about you, and never disregards you or puts you down.

I believe friendship is rare.

When you need help, and help comes, that is your friend. Sometimes it's it's a surprise, and it's the best kind of surprise there is, to discover that you had more friends than you knew about.

Never trust a man with too many friends.

A man with a lot of friends is a man who has comprimised his point of view or ideals or he will sooner or later to preserve the friendship.

I have about 4 true friends. No I don't, I probably have 2.

And even then they wouldn't risk their arse to save me nor do I expect them to.

I like my life and I'm not unhappy whatsoever, some people might need lots of friends to function. That doesn't mean I'm not friendly or affable because I am but I do not need a ton of people to hang around with to
validate myself as a good person.

You shouldn't comment on this because you haven't a clue what I'm about to say but I'll do it anyway.

My army friends were great, but they have moved on as have I.

If I met up with them now it would be great to see them but they would go back to their present lives as would I.

I have fond memories of them and they of me, but we wouldn't fit in each others present and future existence.

I'm a part of their past as they are of mine.

They will never age, they will always be the funny, handsome, tough, loyal blokes that they are in my memory.

I don't want to know them as the fat, bald, whinging about their kids, moaning barstards I'm sure they are now.

To fight it is akin to trying to save a grand piano from a sinking ship.

Thats just the way it is.

A friend is someone who'll drive 100 miles to help you when your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere....at 10PM.

A friend is a person that you've know for so long and that you know so well, that you know they are 100% full of BS. Of course, they know the same about you.

It's somebody you try to humiliate at every possible chance.

You know all of each other's flaws and you enjoy regularly pointing those out to them, and to everybody else.

It's somebody who your not afraid of offending because you know you can't get rid of each other anyway.

It's somebody who just shows up at your house whenever they feel like it and just take things without asking.

I suppose this perspective doesn't apply to F-F friendships.

Like when my Korean coworkers ask "Have you made any foreign friends?" I tell them no, I haven't. I have met some people I occasionally have a drink with or maybe even go shopping with, but not any friends. In Korea it seems that acquaintances are the best you can hope for. This is such a transitory place...I am still trying to find Ms Right, though. Wink

Friends are temporary alliances between 2 people that both have something the other wants. Once that dynamic fails, the association is terminated under cover of some "logical" excuse.

Yes. Which is why its often better to base your long term friendships with people who will always be here- ie koreans.

Friends should be consistent in what they do to, and for, you.

I thought maybe you were chris, the way you seem to focus on me even if I have no idea who you are.

I agree with the OP. There should be a word in between "friend" and "acquaintance". Someone I see regularly is not automatically a friend.

Some of you.....your age is showing. I have four friends of 20+ years.
Friends are "family" that you choose. Friends are loyal, support each other during tough times and are happy for each other when things are going well. Friends communicate on a level that's not superficial.

For me the most difficult thing about being in Korea is less frequent/more difficult contact with my friends.
