I know that my local H&R Block back home was willing to charge me far less than $200 to simply review the forms I'd already filled out. Not sure if company policy allows that or if they were just being nice, but it maybe worth calling them. Also, if it's a FAFSA, often the college itself may be willing to help you for free. Check with your financial aid advisor. |

The best way is to use a program like TurboTax. It's ridiculously easy to use. |

I sat here and did my taxes. It took about 5 hours and somehow I owe over 1,000 dollars. This doesn't seem right...or is it?
I hate this stuff |

You can probably e-mail the Itaewon H&R Block. If you need to send documents, that's easy enough, and you can pay them via a bank transfer. PM me if you'd like that info. That's where I've gotten my taxes done since I've been in Korea. I think the cost is a little over 100,000 won... not exactly cheap, but I'd rather eat a plate of live spiders than fill out tax forms. |

That doesn't sound right if your only income was from working in Korea. Some things to check for:
Did you claim one exemption for yourself?
Did you subtract your standard deduction?
Are you looking at the right tax table? |

Did you subtract your standard deduction? Um...Subtract it from what exactly?
Are you looking at the right tax table? I think so...
I dunno....I filled out the 2555 and it says to put what I'm claiming as the foreign income exclusion on line 21 and put it in parentheses. Does that mean that my income should be zero, since the income I listed on line 7 is the same that I am getting an exemption from?
I like to try do things myself but this is somehow ridiculously difficult, following the directions and all.... |

If your only income is from working in Korea it should be very simple. You can do it online for about 16 bucks through taxcut.

Sorry to hear that. I've never had any problems with Taxcut offline. Where are you from? Just wondering why you're doing taxes in September... |

I'm from N.Y. Why am I doing taxes in September? So I can apply for financial aid. I've been trying to do this crap for months to no avail... |

Do all Americans have to do their taxes every year or is this just cos you're living abroad? Seems odd to have to do them unless you're self-employed and/or a business. |

Okay, maybe there are different rules for people working overseas that I don't know about. In the States we're supposed to have our taxes completed by Apriil 15th.
You shouldn't have to pay any taxes on income under~85,000 earned overseas. Fill out a 1040 and a 2555. Did you try the H&R taxcut service online? What part of the process is giving you trouble? |
