BANGKOK, Thailand - An airplane crashed and broke in two as it attempted to land at the Phuket airport in southern Thailand on Sunday, Chaisak Angsuwan, director general of the Air Transport Authority of Thailand, told a local television station.
He said it was unclear if passengers were killed or injured. It wasn't immediately known how many passengers were on board.
Angsuwan told TITV that there was heavy rain when flight OG269 of Orient Thai Airways traveling from Bangkok to Phuket attempted to make a landing.
"The visibility was poor as the pilot attempted to land. He decided to make a go-around but the plane lost balance and crashed. It was torn into two parts," he said.

Interesting...I flew with Orient Thai from Incheon to Bangkok (return) recently and one of the flights was the most traumatic I've ever been on in terms of the turbulence. I had a horrible feeling that the next plane crash would be that airline... |

Plane crashes in Thailand resort
Many people are feared dead after a plane crashed on landing in bad weather at the Thai resort of Phuket, aviation officials say.
The plane, carrying 123 passengers, a number of them foreigners, crashed after hitting the runway heavily in strong winds and heavy rain.
The number of casualties is not clear but there are reports of survivors.
Flight OG 269, operated by budget airline One-Two-Go, was landing after a journey from the capital, Bangkok.
Rescue operations are under way at the airport and doctors are being flown to Phuket to treat the injured.
Rescuers said the plane caught fire after crashing.
Civil aviation official Chiasak Angkauwan said: "The airplane asked to land but due to the weather in Phuket - strong wind and heavy rain - maybe the pilot did not see the runway clearly.
"The plane then fell onto the runway and broke into two."

One-Two-Go and Orient Thai are one and the same. |

Well thank the Lord. But for a technical hitch/delay, i would have been headed to Phuket this weekend. There but for the Grace of God go I.
You have to wonder about the safety of these small operators. They are using second hand airplanes that have already had many years of service.
There seems to have been a phenomenal number of air accidents this year. I suspect some of these carriers don't replace old aircraft but just keep flying them until they wear out and crash.

I had nice chats with some of the stewards and stewardesses apart the planes when I went there. I hope they survived or weren't on that flight. Such a sad waste of young lives. |

That really is terrible.
I'll be flying Thai if I ever go down to phuket. Not sure I trust the smaller operators. |

That's one of my fears - being in a plane that splits open.
What a mess...even as a survivor, ugggh.
Would be a surreal moment to live through something like that and look around you immediately afterwards. |

Main cause sounds like the pilot was bringing her down too quick, might have been ok but then tried to pull up at the last moment..then skidded as a result.
Really awful.
Anyhow this is the official aviation website for crashes. We have busier skies than ever. Worst recent one was the sao paolo crash back in July.

Here is some pretty insane video of moments after the plane crashed...before emergency services arrived on the scene. It is taken by a Finn of two Swedes who were the first off the plane (they were seated next to the emergency exit).
