I've been given complete teaching autonomy at my HS, where I teach:

1st graders 6 times per week
2nd graders twice a week
3rd graders 3 times per week

Additionally, I teach a 2-hour club activity class every other fortnight. I will also be teaching at another school (girls middle) for 6-hours per week from November.

I arrived about 3-weeks ago and have no idea what my predecessor covered.

What I'd be interested in devising is some kind of programme of study for my 1st and 2nd graders (My 3rd grade and after school lessons are just pure conversation based stuff) i.e. a plan of things that I should really try and include over the coming months.

To this end, can anyone suggest some ideas for language items that I should definitely include in my planning. With my 1st graders all I'm really doing is vocab building at the moment. Whereas with the 2nd graders, who are at a much higher level, I've started out with some work on modals.

I'd particulary welcome any comments or help from long-termers who've been around the block a few years and know their onions.

Thanks in advance.
