My contracts states I teach 22 hours a week, and anything over 22 hours is overtime.

To make it simple, I'll say I teach 24 hours a week. 22 regular school classes and 2 hours of after school classes that I get overtime for.

Next week is Chuseok. I will be teaching 2 after school overtime hour classes on Thurs. and Fri.

Will I still get overtime or will they assume since I didn't teach Mon-wed, that they can add the 2 overtime hours into being part of my allotted 22 hours a week due to the holiday?

You SHOULD get the overtime pay because they can't expect you to work 22 hours during Chusok. I got my extra pay. Unless your school is crooked, you'll get extra pay.

If you don't actually work overtime, why should you get paid overtime?

I only teach 15 classes a week at my two public schools and I get paid overtime for all my after school classes. I have more after school classes than I do regular classes.

Of course you'll get extra pay. The students pay money for the classes, so if you don't get the money, who does?

If the after school classes are paid for by the students you should get paid for those. They should have nothing to do with the "22" hours.

However, if it is considered overtime and the school pays then you are not going to be paid over time for Chusok week nor the next week as there is a holiday on October 3rd.

I insisted last year they calculate my overtime weekly as I teach 2 hours overtime every week (regular classes). Some weeks I get the over time but if there is a holiday I don't. Pretty much like back home.

Assuming those overtime classes are afterschool classes and students voluntarily enrolled in them and paid money, you should have to teach X amount of classes and get paid for that amount. It's irrelevant if your normal schedule is holidays or regular classes are cancelled. However, you would be responsible to make up afterschool classes you missed because of the holidays.

Here is the mentality of the school:

Contract states 22 class hours a week.

During Chuseok I would only be teaching 8 regular hours, 4 hours on Thurs. and 4 hours on Fri.

Because I am only teaching 8 regular classes that week, they want to tack on my 2 afterschool classes, which is overtime pay, onto my regular class hours.

8 regular class + 2 afterschool classes = 10 classes for the week of Chuseok.

Since its only 10 total hours of teaching for bthe week of Chuseok, their mentality is that I get no overtime since 10 hours <<< 22 hours.

I have an after school class next Friday, and I'm getting paid for it. Put your foot down on this one, but gently so that no one loses face. The school is still going to receive the same salary money from the education office for you, and they're going to funnel the extra after school money into teachers' drinking parties or a new computer for the principal.

Yes, but your food down and demand that they pay you for your after school classes. I don't even work near my 22 contract hours. The school still pays me OT for my after school programs that I teach. I work more classes in after school programs and I do my regular classes.

For those who are paid over time for their extra classes, are these classes actually after school hours? My contract states that I must be at school for 8 hours, not counting lunch, which is from 8:30 to 5:30, therefore I'm not paid overtime for these extra classes during those hours, except for those that bring my total up to more than 22 hours a week. A more important question is how can I convince them to change that? I may have to wait until my next contract.

For me, no. Extra-curricular, as in after school gets out for the day, but students remain for classes they signed up for and paid for.

I get anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000 per class. If student numbers are high I can ask for 40,000 or so. If it's a small class the school usually just pays me 30,000. I know they keep a little as well for administration fees, but who cares - I'm getting close to what I could get for privates without the hassles.

If they stopped doing this, I'd fill up my evenings with privates and use more sick days. English equals money in Korea, and I don't care what national contracts say. The school will negotiate, but it's hard to undo what's already been done. You need to nip their cash grabs in the bud.

In my contract has be at the school from 8:30 to 4:30. I have one after school class that startes at 3:00 and another one that starts at 3:55. I get paid extra for both.
